Learning Meditation: Teachers, Schools & Retreats
Types of Practitioners and Teachers
There are many different kinds of practitioners and teachers of meditation. Each will have his or her own approach to meditation techniques and methods of learning them. Some meditation teachers offer one-on-one instruction, while others hold meditation classes.
When all is said and done, all practice of meditation leads to a higher plane of mental awareness and experience. The teachers may offer techniques and guidance, but it is up to the practitioner to do the real work. Therefore, it is helpful to find a teacher who practices a form of meditation that is a good match to your lifestyle and desired goals.
Meditation Schools
Meditation schools, also referred to as meditation centers, are available for both eastern and western styles of meditation. They commonly provide teachings, guidance, a quiet place to meditate without distraction, and a number of other useful resources. Many meditation schools also offer meditation classes to enable students to learn meditation techniques of different kinds, while helping practitioners to learn and perfect their own practice.
Meditation Retreats
A meditation retreat is a great place for you to learn meditation and better your meditation techniques in a place that is apart from your regular life and its distractions and stresses. There are many different kinds of meditation retreats, but in general a quality retreat should provide a quiet atmosphere in which you may learn and practice your meditation.
Some meditation retreats will also provide meditation classes, workshops, and safe spaces in which you can recover from illness or stress. These retreats have been in existence for centuries.

Teacher Training and Experience
Just like with everything else in life, meditating is something that comes with practice, knowledge and education. For a meditation teacher to be properly qualified to teach meditation, they must have been trained themselves, must know and understand the techniques, and must have practiced meditation over an extended period of time to have gained enough experience to know what works, what doesn't and what to look for in the most effective meditation methods for a given person.
There is no single way that is correct for meditation, and without the right level of education and experience, a teacher simply cannot properly assist another person. What works for the teacher won't necessarily work for the student, and the teacher must know how to guide the student to find what is right for him or her. Moreover, you shouldn't be afraid to try a few meditation teachers until you find one who "clicks" for you.
Issues of Privacy
While meditation is not counseling, a good deal may be shared with the meditation teacher in order to discover the best meditation techniques for your personality. Because of this disclosure, it is important to discuss any issues of privacy or overall privacy policies in advance.
Meditation and Emotions
Meditation is an experience that delves deep into the mind and can, at times, access a wide range of emotions. Occasionally, transient emotions of anxiety, remembered trauma, depression, emotional crisis, and other symptoms may occur. With a good teacher, a meditator can work through these transitions in a healthy way.
