What is Medical Qi Gong?
One of the foundational concepts of Oriental Medicine is that an energetic life force flows through our bodies, regulating its function. This subtle energy is often called Qi, pronounced “chee”. Qi Gong, literally energy work, is a general term for thousands of methods that have been created to enhance an individual’s conscious control over the body’s Qi.
History of Qi Gong
While the Western world is just beginning to understand the nature of this energy, traditional arts of Asia have focused on its development for thousands of years. Like many ancient practices, the history of Qi Gong is clouded in mystery. It is said to have begun with Bodhidharma, an Indian monk that traveled to China and instructed the Taoist monks of WuDang Mountain in the earliest forms of energy cultivation. Development continued over several thousand years leading to various meditation, healing, and martial practices. Today, Qi Gong is best known for its mild, soft, and flowing exercises that cultivate health and energy. There are many styles of Qi Gong, but the most notable are Tai Chi Chuan, Taoist Meditation, and Medical Qi Gong healing.
Theory and Application
Medical Qi Gong, also known as Wai Qi Zhi Liao, is an integral part of Oriental Medicine and is based upon the same principles used by Acupuncturists to balance and harmonize the body. The Qi flows through a network of pathways called meridians. These meridians cover the surface of the body, and form internal pathways that connect the vital organs. When the flow of Qi in the body becomes obstructed, pain and disease can develop. By unblocking the flow of energy in the body, health and vitality can be returned and maintained.
In Medical Qi Gong therapy, a Qi Gong master utilizes his own internal healing ability to correct the flow of energy in the patient’s body. There are no needles or other devices used, and from an external view it may not look much different from a relaxing massage. However, the effects can be profound when applied correctly by a skilled Qi Gong master.
A qualified Medical Qi Gong practitioner will have attained a significant level of ability through their own Qi Gong or Tai Chi practice. This skill will have increased their capacity to feel and cultivate internal healing energy. The ability to emit healing Qi develops and allows them to adjust the energy of others.
Medical Qi Gong healing techniques can vary depending on the style of the practitioner. Some Qi Gong masters make contact with the diseased area of the patient’s body to locally alter the flow of Qi in the area. Others may provide their healing Qi from a distance, either a few inches from your body or possibly even across the room. The skill and level of each healer can vary greatly, so you should seek one that makes you feel comfortable with their style of treatment.
A Personal Practice
Besides receiving treatments from a Medical Qi Gong practitioner, you should also learn some Qi Gong exercises. As energy blockages are resolved and your energy flows stronger through the Medical Qi Gong treatments, you should create a personal practice that will increase your health and help maintain the flow of energy in the body. Medical Qi Gong practitioners often teach classes where you can learn basic internal Qi Gong exercises. These classes commonly include meditation and moving Qi Gong forms to start your Qi Gong development.
At more advanced levels, classes can guide you in the development of external Qi Gong skills to emit energy and aid others. Remember, proper training from a qualified teacher is important. Just as you are able to cultivate your energy through proper practice, improper practice can disrupt your energy flow and lead to health problems.
Over time, a personal Qi Gong practice will provide life-long benefits. With dedicated and sincere practice, your immune system will strengthen and effectively fight illness, such as common colds. You may also feel more energized throughout the day, and have a clear and calm mind. As the years progress, you may feel that the clock is slowly being turned back to develop a healthier and more vital version of you.
