Acupressure Aids Dementia Symptoms of Agitation

Traditional Chinese medicine comes to the rescue again, this time aiding in symptoms of dementia related to extreme agitation.

The Journal of Clinical Nursing published a study that was conducted at the National Yang-Ming University in Taiwan showing that acupressure, particularly through massage therapy could be a legitimate, drug-free method to treat depression and agitation in older patients suffering from dementia.

Throughout the course of a six-week study, 20 patients were administered with acupressure treatments. National Yang-Ming University’s Institute of Clinical Nursing offered Professor Li-Chan’s comments, “our study showed that providing patients with acupressure twice-daily for five days a week significantly reduced agitated behavior and wandering.”

These symptoms of the disease that affects many aging adults is a particular problem when it comes to their safety. Caregivers constantly struggle with the best way to administer aid while protecting the patient from unnecessary dangers.
