Acupuncture in the Stroke Belt

Southern African-Americans older than 40, are you living in the Stroke Belt ?

African-Americans who live in a large portion of the southeast that stretches from the Carolinas through Arkansas, are living in what is known in the U.S. as the “Stroke Belt" because its residents have a 50 percent higher risk for stroke than white or Hispanic Americans living in elsewhere in the country.

Sadly, doctors still don’t know why the Southeast has a higher rate of strokes than anywhere else in the country, even though the "Stroke Belt" is more than 60 years old.

However, news in Acupuncture Today reveals that acupuncture, an alternative medicine modality, can help a stroke victim speed their recovery time and overall physical functioning, as well if not better than conventional methods.

The study at the Daniel Freeman Rehabilitation Center in Los Angeles was done on stroke victims who suffered weakness in either one or both sides of the body.

The conclusion was that acupuncture patients gained “significantly
greater lower extremity motor function” and less joint pain.

The point, though was for stroke victims to understand the value of a healthy lifestyle, and preventative medicine to promote general wellness.

Auricular therapy, rooted in Traditional Chinese Medicine is the most commonly used for post-stroke acupuncture treatment.
