Antioxidants in the Big Apple

Martha Stewart reported on The View that this year’s crop of apples is a particularly spectacular one.

With apple season right around the corner, the timing is “ripe” to review the health benefits of this piece of Mother Nature’s candy.

According to alternative medicine expert, Dr. Weil, not all apples are created equal. Many might already know that the skin is five times more beneficial than the flesh, but did you know that Red Delicious and Northern Spy varieties are the highest in antioxidants?

Empire apples come in last place when it comes to benefits for natural health, offering less than half of the antioxidant power of the Red Delicious.

An apple a day will keep the doctor away not only because of their antioxidant power, but also because of their high fiber content. High cholesterol, heart disease and cancer are all conditions that can be aided with these wellness foods.

A Finnish study of 10,000 men indicated that an increased apple intake was related to a significant decrease in lung cancer cases.

With all this in mind, it might be time to plan a weekend trip to your nearest orchard.
