Technological wonders of the 21st century have not only changed the way we do business, they have altered the pace at which we live our daily lives. But operating at such a fast tempo can work to your detriment without proper balance.

Most of us understand the importance of a healthy diet and exercise, but how much value do we give to getting rest? Putting off a good night’s sleep in order to deliver on a critical deadline may be an advantageous career decision, but is it healthy for your body?

In an article from the American Holistic Health Association, ayurvedic methods for getting a good night’s sleep incorporate alterations in the diet.

If you suffer from:

Trouble falling asleep - try increasing your daily intake of poppy seeds and herbal teas. Both act as soothing, sleep aids. Also decrease the amount of cold, light foods, such as spring salads, and increase warm, oily and heavy foods.

Inability to sleep through the night – reduce the number of hot, spicy foods that you eat. Sweet and bitter foods are recommended such as a date milkshake. This is a concoction of pitted, chopped dates, milk and sugar mixed together in a blender. Coconut oil or olive oil applied to your extremities before bed might also aid in a full night’s sleep.

Waking up lethargic – scale down on heavy foods that are cold and oily. Light, dry and warm meals are what will help you wake up feeling renewed and energetic.

For all sleep deprivation difficulties ayurvedic expert, Rama Kant Mishra, recommends deep, easy breathing once you climb in bed and a blend of aroma oils for a soothing and relaxing ambiance in the boudoir.
