Chinese Herbs for Asthma

Acupuncture and other forms of traditional Chinese medicine have proven their successful benefits in recent years in treating many common conditions, including asthma.

The Mount Sinai School of Medicine, in conjunction with China’s Weifang School of Medicine, has discovered the effectiveness of three Chinese herbs in treating asthma symptoms without the side effects commonly associated with traditional Western medicines like corticosteroid and prednisone therapy.

Ku Shen (Sophora flavensis), Ling Zhi (Ganoderma lucidum) and Gan Cao (Glycyrrhiza uralensis) are the three wonder herbs that when used in combination are being touted as the herbal medicine intervention called Antiasthma, or ASHMI.

While this Chinese herbal remedy combination does not prove to be anymore effective prednisone, the fact that there are no negative side effects makes it a viable complementary medical option in treating asthma. Common side effects from traditional asthma therapies include changes in the adrenal function causing gastric pains and weight gain.

Other positive effects of the Chinese herbal asthma treatment, ASHMI include improved lung function and improved cytokine levels.
