Furry Friends Need Good Food

The careless poisoning of America’s pets earlier this year caused many of us to wake up and smell the kibbles ‘n bits. It absolutely does make a difference what goes into your pet’s food, and subsequently into their bodies. The trend to feed our furry friends with natural pet products is growing as fast as the wildfires in the West.

Just as you might not trust the manufacturers of human foods not to poison your body with harmful ingredients, here are some tips for reading the ingredient labels on canned pet foods:

Make sure the first ingredient has a recognizable face! Chicken, salmon, lamb or beef should come first. This means no “meat product,” “meat by-product” or plain ol’ unidentified “meat.” We can tell you what exactly what kind of animals these “meats” are – one of the four D’s: dead, dying, diseased or disabled.

Fat and grains should also be listed in specifics, not generic terms, “animal fat” or grain by-product.”

Look for broth or water in slot number two.

Finally, steer clear of sugars, sweeteners, artificial colors and artificial preservatives like BHA/BHT or Ethoxyquin.
