Hawthorn (Shan Zha) Benefits the Heart

A new clinical trial suggests that alternative herbal therapy can be beneficial for heart disease patients. The study focused on the use of hawthorn extract. Hawthorn, also known as Shan Zha, is a well known herbal remedy and is commonly used in Chinese Herbal Medicine. The traditional indications for the herb include many heart disease symptoms and it is considered very useful for conditions of hyperlipidema.

The study followed 855 patients and examined the effects of combining the herb with standard treatment. The results indicated improved heart function and a decrease of symptoms associated with heart failure, supporting the herb’s use as a cardiotonic.

Heart failure is common condition that developes as we age. Obstructed arteries increase the demands of the heart muscle, leading to an over-developed state. Circulation is further impaired, leading to possible fluid accumulation in the lower extremities or lungs.

Hawthorn extract may also be beneficial to patients due to its ability to lower cholesterol and boost antioxidant levels. Hawthorn is considered a safe herb with a small chance of experiencing side effects.
