Healing, Healthy Diets

In the world of alternative health, one of the main philosophies rests on the belief that with proper care and nutrition, the body’s natural ability to heal itself. Where conventional medicine tries to suppress symptoms with chemicals and drugs, alternative medicine hopes to look at the whole person to find a more in-depth, underlying cause.

For example, Graves’ disease is known to be caused by an overactive thyroid. Traditionally conventional medicine treats Graves’ disease by trying to inhibit the thyroid. Tess Thompson explained that traditional treatments look to “suppress the immune system for quick remission of the condition by curtailing thyroid hormone production with the aid of immunosuppressive drugs…erode some of the thyroid tissue with radioactive iodine therapy…[or] remove a large part of the thyroid gland by invasive surgery.”

Alternative medical treatments for thyroid disorders, such as Graves’ disease, uses a holistic approach that often involves a diet plan aimed to aid the body’s defense mechanisms. Thompson reported that, “a thyroid-friendly diet plan will ensure that goitrogens, foods which naturally suppress thyroid function, like broccoli, cauliflower, artificial sweeteners, almonds and peaches are avoided.”
