More Proof Supporting Calcium and Vitamin D Supplements

We’ve all been told from an early age that calcium and vitamin D are essential for healthy bones. Now there is more research to back up those claims.

Australia’s University of Western Sydney Centre for Complementary Medicine Research (CompleMED) compared results from more than 29 international studies of more than 63,000 people, aged 50-and-older, who used calcium and vitamin D supplements. The results further backed up the notion that long term use of these essential supplements could reduce fractured, senior bones by almost one-fourth.

Osteoporosis is a common condition as we age. Over time bones lose minerals which causes them to become brittle, porous and fragile, and therefore more susceptible to breaks and fractures.

As we reported earlier on altMD, the Dietary Supplement Education Alliance found that seniors, 65-and-older, taking calcium and vitamin D supplements, could save America’s healthcare industry $16.1 billion in five years with more than 700,000 fewer hip-fracture, E.R. visits.

In Australia, osteoporosis adds up to $7.4 billion per year in healthcare costs.
