Reading Round-up: SuperFoods HealthStyle

Acupuncture, massage therapy and other methods of complementary medicine are essential in maintaining Qi and harmony. Another approach for a long and healthy life originates with prevention through a healthy diet.

Steven Pratt, M.D., the author of SuperFoods Healthstyle explains that the best approach for optimal health and preventing disease comes from a diet rich in phytochemicals. And while none of the foods listed on his “top-six” list are surprising, review them again for inspiration to start a fresh new day in a healthy way.

Broccoli’s sulforaphane properties are especially helpful in fighting lung, stomach, colon, and rectal cancer. Pumpkins contain alpha- and beta-carotenes that help boost the immune system and fight against cataracts.

In addition to helping the heart, the amhocyanidins found in blueberries can protect against Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases and have also been found to slow age-related memory loss.

To decrease heart attack and stroke risks, go fishing. Salmon, mackerel, lake trout, sardines, and tuna can help with these conditions as well as cutting in half the chance of dying from coronary artery disease.

Dr. Pratt rounds up the list with spinach and tomatoes. The leafy green protects against cancer, macular degeneration and heart disease, while the lycopene-loaded tomato has antioxidant properties that reduce the risk of cancers like prostate, breast and lung.
