Research supports Milk Thistle for Liver Health

A recent study conducted at the University of California at Irvine supports the use of Milk Thistle for a healthy liver. Milk Thistle, Silybum marianum, has been used for centuries by herbalists for protecting and healing the liver. This has proven important in modern life with the large amount of abuse the liver sustains from alcohol and drug toxicity.

The study was lead by Dr. Ke-Qin Hu and focused on a purified form of Milk Thistle called Silibinin. The research showed that Silibinin provided various anti-Liver cancer effects, including reducing cancer cell proliferation, enhanced programmed death of cancer cells, and altered chromatin structure of cancer cells.

Liver cancer is the 5th most common type of cancer in humans. It is highly common due to the cirrhosis caused by Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C, and alcohol abuse. Milk Thistle is considered a safe herb with few side effects reported in clinical trials.
