Survey Says: Massage Therapy is a Top Requested Spa Treatment

Harris International Spas and the International Spa Association released the results from their worldwide study that showed there are more than 150 million spa consumers throughout the world, with the major markets found in America, Japan, Italy, Thailand and Germany.

From the 150 million spa consumer, massage therapy is one of the top three requested treatments.

In Thailand, Singapore and Germany, the male-to-female client ratio is close to equal. Germany reports 47 percent men to 53 percent women, compared to locales such as the United Kingdom, where only 22 percent men receive massage therapy at spas, but 78 percent. Canada reports similar studies of the sexes with 29 percent of men booking a spa services, but 71 percent of Canadian women take advantage of the alternative health regimen.

This is the first this first ISPA Global Consumer Report and it showed that here in the States, American men fully support the idea of treating themselves to deep tissue and sports massages. While women in the United States reported they were more likely to seek out spa massage services for appearance enhancement reasons.

The top massage pick from a U.S. spa was the full-body massage treatment. In Japan and Shiatsu massage and aromatherapy were the most popular treatments. Thai men and women enjoy reflexology the most.
