Oxygen Therapy is a generic term describing a therapeutic modality where oxygen is administered to the patient to increase the oxygen supply to the lungs and body tissues. Proponents believe that Oxygen Therapy delivers vital levels of oxygen to support cell respiration. A specific form, Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) involves the breathing of pure oxygen while in a sealed chamber. According to the American Cancer Society, HBOT has been shown to be effective for the prevention and treatment of osteoradionecrosis – which is delayed bone damage caused by radiation therapy – when HBOT is used in addition to conventional treatment. According to the American Cancer Society, while there is no proof that HBOT cures cancer, there is also some evidence suggesting HBOT may be helpful as an additional treatment for soft tissue injury caused by radiation treatment for cancer.
