About two years ago, in a used book store, I happened across a book that caught my attention, despite the corny title. I immediately took it home and started to devour its pages with the ferocity some reserve for romance novels. It was not the exploits of some far away love story, however, but something a little closer to home – a fascinating tale about an idea which has lost ground in these times of an uncertain economy and a changing world overall. It was a simple book about how a family built a company around their lifestyle.

 

All too often, lightning aspirations to reach the top in our careers will cause us to put the interests of people (who may or may not appreciate us) above those that we hold dear to our heart: our family. Knowingly or not, many of us often give up the right to experience the joys and perils of being a family in order to gain fleeting feelings of success at work.

 

This book (that should be in every home) tells a story from the 1970s about a husband and wife with little business aptitude. They built a bread company with a mandate: no matter how successful the company became, they would always put the priorities of the family first. In fact the family would set out on three-month vacations, leaving the day-to-day operations to others so that the parents could share – and learn – with their children the joy of being a true family.

 

They took the concept further by creating a system in which they hired people based on their commitment to their families more than on the likelihood that they would contribute to the company’s success. Our Daily Bread follows the rise of the Great Harvest Bread Company, a company and group of people whom I have come to admire greatly. They have revived the old concept of making healthy bread and, in so doing, ended up creating a new concept for improving the lives of the people who work there and who purchase the company’s products.

 

In our society, the increasing number of options in our lives (school, work, after-school commitments, TV, internet, etc.) draw families further and further apart. On average, families spend less than three hours per day engaged in truly family activities. With weak family bonds, it is all the more difficult to find the strength to adjust to common life challenges such as death, separation, and changes in jobs or homes.

 

The message, so beautifully illustrated by this book, is that there is a solution to this problem. First, reverse your priorities. Put the interests of your family and their activities first, even if it means cutting back on extracurricular activities. If your child has more than three after-school activities per week (soccer, music, karate, etc.) you may want to reevaluate your priorities. Use the extra time (and savings) to surprise each other: spontaneously pick your kids up from school and do something fun and healthy that the family enjoys. Take a two-or three-day vacation to a place that will build memories without breaking the bank. Take your spouse to dinner when he or she least expects it. Visit your grandparents often so that you can teach the next generation about your family’s history, and so that they are well equipped to pass it on to their children.

 

Finally, if you really want to be creative, start your own business where you build a family-friendly environment into the business plan. A CNN report from October 2007 indicates that more and more fathers are opting for careers that allow them to spend more quality time with their families. In our business, we often bring our son to work and encourage our co-workers to do the same. Yes, the little ones do sometimes get in the way, but how can we ever replace the time we would otherwise miss with our own child? Make the most of the short time you have on this earth, and keep in the forefront of your mind the interests of those people who will carry you when you are hurt and cry for you when you depart this finite life. Truthfully, will a corporation cry if you pass away or remember the great memories you created?

My mom, just shy of sixty years of age, looks at least fifteen years younger than many people her age. She consumes a healthy diet with plenty of water, avoids prolonged exposure to direct sunlight, and gets plenty of good sleep each night. This self-admitted granola kid is my model for good health, and she possesses an elegance to her beauty that is hard to describe, so you can imagine my shock when she told me that she was considering going under the knife to try to look twenty years younger. Rather than seeing her get one of those Joan Rivers’ “permanent smiles,” I started to look for non-threatening “facelifts”.

 

I looked first at the creams, but many of them contained harmful ingredients that I knew my mother would not accept. Chemical peels seem to work, but with the acid and occasional allergic reactions I quickly discounted this approach. I came across collagen injections, but there is some pain involved and the idea of a foreign substance being injected into her body would surely get raised eyebrows – just not the kind that she was looking for. Then I came across acupuncture for facelifts. Acupuncture? I knew acupuncture was effective for headaches, abdominal discomfort, and muscle pain, but I never even considered it for a facelift.

 

With a history longer than many western civilizations, acupuncture is an ancient component of traditional Asian medicine. In the simplest terms, it is the process by which a trained practitioner inserts a very fine needle just below the skin’s surface in order to facilitate the natural flow of energy in the body. As electrical organisms (if you think we are not electrical, send a strong current through your heart and see what happens) problems and discomfort occur because the energy cycle is blocked. The acupuncture needle helps to unblock the flow and thereby facilitates good health.

 

Over time, our faces lose much of their muscle mass and skin elasticity in the same way that muscles atrophy through disuse. In acupuncture, needles are inserted to restore efficient electrical impulses to hold muscles and skin tight, thereby reducing the appearance of aging. Though there is no proof of its effectiveness, from what I’ve read and in talking with a few acupuncturists I am assured that it is safe and gets results. However, there are some factors to keep in mind. Results depend on age, gender, and sometimes ethnicity. Obviously it is best to work with someone who is familiar with the technique because, like any other medical field, there are specialists and generalists. Surely you would not go to your family doctor for brain surgery? The same is true with acupuncture. You must look for an acupuncturist familiar with the procedure to gain the best results. Since my mother is familiar with acupuncture, this idea might appeal to her. If not, I may have to get used to seeing a Joker-like smile for years to come!

My late friend and sometime business mentor Bob Smith once said, “If you want to get a person interested in what you are selling, you have to get them to ask questions.” If they don’t ask questions, then you know they won’t call on you for your services. For massage therapists, what you say to a person is the most important part of selling your service. You have to change their perceptions about what they think you offer and convince them that you provide something unique. You have to speak to them in plain language that also leads them to ask questions. In order to reach this “pivot point” of selling, there are some basic guidelines to follow when working a networking mixer.

 

First, join a local business or social group – be it the Rotary Club, Chamber of Commerce, or other association – for at least a year. Attend their networking events because they offer chances to discover what you can do for your fellow business owners. What you can do for your fellow business owners? Yes, if you can make people feel that you are going to help them – rather than the other way around – you will be way ahead of the competition.

 

To be most effective at networking events, prepare appropriately in terms of wardrobe, business cards, and conversational strategy. Wear a shirt that has your company name/logo on it. If you don’t have any, for about $99 www.queensboro.com can make five polo-style shirts with your company name on them. These shirts draw people’s attention, and when you see them looking you know you have someone open to conversation. Avoid people who are already in conversations, and look for people who are moving around and ready to chat.

 

To help focus your efforts, take only five business cards with you to the mixer. In a typical one-hour mixer, talking to five people serves you well by encouraging you to spend quality time with a few individuals. Trying to meet too many people makes you seem rushed, and you miss chances to really listen to someone who may need you. After you have passed out five cards, it is probably time to leave. Don’t stay too long and look like a buzzard searching for an easy meal.

 

The final element to prepare involves conversation. Be ready to answer the question, "What do you do?” Never, ever say that you are a massage therapist to this perfunctory question. Too often the words “massage therapist” end the questions, meaning you have lost a potential business relationship. I like to say that I help people naturally relieve pain and discomfort. Almost without fail, the person asks, “How?” Now that the listener is hooked, you can proceed to tell them that you teach people how to relax, improve health, and relieve pain with techniques practiced for many years. “Oh,” is usually the response, but it is a positive “oh.” It indicates that you have tempted – but not yet fully satisfied – their curiosity. At this point, turn the conversation back to them, so they don’t start forming their own erroneous opinions of your work. Ask about their work and pay close attention, because they will recognize your interest and respect you more. After noting what they do, ask them how often they exercise or if they ever have headaches, a tight neck, a pulled muscle, or difficulty sleeping. Again, you are trying to determine how to best help them. 

 

Have you noticed that the words, “massage therapist” have not yet been uttered? After you give them time to tell you more about themselves, mention that you are a clinically trained massage therapist. “Clinically trained" is vital because you want to exclude any notions that you are just going to rub them down or, even worse, that you are a sex worker. As you talk, hopefully they will become more interested in your work. Even if they don’t, as the conversation ebbs thank them for the nice talk and tell them you will call them soon to see if you can help each other. As soon as you separate, write as much as you can remember about them on the back of their business card, noting their exercise habits, any health issues, and any family information they may have given. If you have space, jot down what solutions you think will help their problems.

 

About two days later, with their cards handy, call your potential clients. Talk to them about specific issues and see if they still need help with any of their problems. Tell them that you enjoyed hearing about their work and that you would like to hear more about it when they visit your office. If they agree, then you are in business. Perhaps only 1 in 5 will accept your offer, but it’s a start. After a few mixers, you will have built a good client base that will help you increase your success. Once you are comfortable with these techniques, you will be amazed at how easy it is to get people in your door.

Do you know your grandparents? Better still, your great-grandparents? I don’t mean the iconic figures reputed for warm food and comfort during the holidays, but the real people. Have you taken the time to really know them? Too often in our modern, busy world we know very little about these amazing people. It’s a shame, given that without their efforts you wouldn’t even be reading this article.

 

Last week we called my grandmother to see how she was doing and, since she acts as the repository of our family’s history, to catch up on the happenings of our relatives. Like many folks of a bygone era, the tone of the early conversation was quite formal, but over time the formality faded and we talked as two friends. While listening to the roll-call of family activities, I realized, sadly, that one day she would not be here. And then who could I trust to pass on the knowledge of our ancestors and the quirky tidbits of my own mother’s childhood? I felt fear as I realized that when we pass, we become little more than a name to most of our family members. How could I prevent this tragedy?

 

A simple solution exists: an autobiography. I proposed it to my siblings and they enthusiastically agreed – especially since my grandmother’s age made time a real factor.

 

Autobiographies of famous people are ubiquitous, but few exist about “regular” people. While reading about world leaders and international jetsetters satisfies curious interests, nothing inspires so much as the life story of my grandmother’s challenges and triumphs. Imagine my awe as I read about her, a single mother, working for the military in Panama in the 1940s. She had an inexplicable thought that she needed to go home immediately, and when she arrived she found her two toddlers locked in the house – the babysitter nowhere to be found – with loose papers scattered about them. The story takes a frightening turn – one that literally threatens my existence – when she explains that the lights in the house were fueled by highly flammable kerosene oil.

 

Such stories would be lost forever if they aren’t recorded. But how do you start such a seemingly daunting task as writing an autobiography of the revered patriarch of your family?

 

Research is the first step. The best method is to create a graph (on paper or a computer) representing the life of your subject divided into seven-year blocks. (If he or she is 95 years old, you’ll need fourteen blocks.) For each block, think of ten to twenty questions related to that seven-year window that you’d like to ask. Start by asking easy questions such as where he or she was born and the circumstances of the birth. What memories of their parents do they have? Simple questions work as ice-breakers, and in a short time you’ll be discovering facts and stories more interesting to you than any book from a big bookstore. Your goal is to make your subject feel comfortable sharing life stories and talking as a friend rather than as some perceived pillar of the family.

 

To facilitate research and aid the stream-of-consciousness of your subject’s tales, invest in a recording device (a cheap cassette recorder and blank cassettes work just as well as a fancy digital gizmo) that can hold twenty to fifty hours of material. While such large capacity may seem excessive, remember that you are about to chronicle an entire person’s life, so one hour per year is really not much.

 

Once your research is completely recorded, it’s time to put the book together. Find a local transcription service, because you don’t want to risk losing forever your irreplaceable recordings (not to mention all your hard work) in lost mail. You’ll also want to find a ghostwriter who can craft the tales into an interesting book (found easily on sites such as craigslist.org or at a local college where starving academics are ready to help for modest payment). Add some pictures of your subject and significant people in his or her life, making sure to represent the different life stages (remember your seven-year blocks).

Creating a written history of your relative provides great enjoyment for the whole family, and the copies make excellent family gifts for holidays. Perhaps the greatest gift comes from the permanent tribute to an undeniably significant person in all of your lives. Honoring their achievements and sharing their lessons will benefit your entire family, including those members who have yet to arrive.

Lower back pain is one of the most frequent problems treated by orthopedic surgeons. Four out of five adults will experience significant lower back pain sometime during their lives. After the common cold, problems caused by the lower back are the most frequent cause of lost workdays in adults under the age of 45. There are many causes for lower back pain, and many of those conditions need medical attention. However, therapeutic massage has generally been accepted as a non-invasive alternative. But massage alone will do little if the recipients do little to become proactive in good back health. These 7 steps are a minimum that each person should do to keep in top shape, and they can be remembered by the acronym MASSAGE.

 

Maintain a Balanced Diet

I was once told that if we all ate the right foods our health insurance cost would go down and the vitamin companies would go out of business. Unless you have a compromised metabolism, nature provides all the necessary vitamins, nutrients and energy required. At a minimum your diet should include a heavy veggie group with plenty of the dark green stuff, a protein group that is lean, and a starch group. Your body draws most of its operating energy from the starch group. However, unless you are in training mode your body will rarely need as much energy as you may think. A good rule of thumb for staying healthy is to eat a fist-sized amount of cooked food from the protein and starch groups and/or two fist-sized servings of raw veggies 3-6 times a day.

 

Drink wAter all day

I know that somewhere on this planet someone made a recommendation that we should drink 8 cups, or about 64 ounces, of water each day. This is a great idea but you can’t really walk around all day with a measuring cup! If you really want to know how much water to drink, check your urine color. If it is slightly yellow you are on track. If it’s gold you are not drinking enough water. Simple, right? The great thing about water is that, unlike food, if your body can’t use it, it just gets rid of it. Again, this works for most of the population. If your body is compromised by disease or illness this method may not be the best approach.

 

Stretch often

Stretching is one of those cheap yet effective ways to keep your back as well as the rest of your body limber and ready for action. If you do not stretch, your back muscles tend to get a little shorter and as such will start to cause pain. Like a rubber band, the muscles contract more forcefully and with greater efficiency if they are often pre-stretched. If you like the rubber band analogy, think of a rubber band on a cold day. If it is not stretched a few times before it is ready to work, it will more than likely snap when put under tension. Your back will do the same except that rather than snapping it will simply “go out” – and there goes your weekend!

 

Wear Shoes that fit well.

Your feet are your base of support whether you are walking or standing still, and everyone knows that a wider, flatter base is more stable than a narrow tilted one. So it is no wonder that we all have back problems after wearing shoes that are too narrow or with a tilt provided by high heels. As a general rule, shoes should provide a wide toe box for the toes to spread. A heel no taller than an inch and a half is also recommended. Granted most shoes that fit this model in the past were not the most fashionable, but shoe design has come a long way in the last 20 years. Chances are there are plenty of shoes out there that can easily accommodate this format. Furthermore, never shop for shoes early in the day. Your feet swell later in the afternoon, therefore proper fitting should occur after you have been on your feet for some time.

 

Use Proper Alignment when sleeping

Sleeping allows the body time to rest and repair itself after the action of the previous day. A minimum of 6-8 hours a day is best. If you have trouble sleeping for that long, try to stay in bed for at least 6-8 hours even if you are not sleeping because your body is making repairs. How you sleep is also quite important. If you sleep on your side, a pillow in between your legs will make a world of difference in the morning. Pillows should only be used to keep the head in alignment with the rest of the spine. Excessive fluffiness may cause long-term pain in your neck and will therefore affect the rest of your back.

 

 

Use Good posture

Like all muscle groups in the body, the back muscles get stronger when you work them. The erector spine group, like the name implies, keeps the spine erect. Sitting up straight is a sure way to keep your spine erect until you decide it’s time to depart this earth. If you have not sat up straight for some time, start sitting up consciously for about five minutes at a time. Then start adding another minute on to this each week and before long you will find that sitting up straight will be no more complicated than taking walk or reading a book.

 

Exercise no less than 3 times a weeks

Exercise is the cheapest form of medicine ever discovered. It costs nothing but time and commitment. It provides a host of benefits including better adaptation to stress, better sleep patterns, improved bone strength and skin tone, improved circulation, and all the other stuff that you already know that exercise does. However if you want to help keep the low back in tiptop shape, get strong abs. Not abs of steel – just strong abs. The abdominal muscles along with the back muscles provide a stable back for the trunk. If the abs are weak then the brunt of the work falls on the back, and like all other muscles they get fatigued from overwork. This is one of the reasons why mothers in the last few month of pregnancy have back pain. The growing child causes the abdominal muscle group to become ineffective at assisting the back in providing a stable base. In a nutshell abs exercised often along with other parts of the body will keep it healthy. As a note of caution, if your back has been compromised by injury please seek out the assistance of a doctor familiar with helping people with back pain through exercise. The worst thing you can do in most cases is to overmedicate and under-exercise your back because this combination will exacerbate the problem.

In one of the richest and most advanced countries in the world, it’s alarming that we have such poor health. With an army of health care practitioners and an arsenal of drug remedies for just about any form of illness, we are still some of the sickest people in the world. Partly this dichotomy results from the Americanized lifestyle of “sin now and pay later,” but a bigger contributor is our tendency to react to a major health problem instead of modifying our lives more towards prevention. This problem stands out even more in the communities of color because many people do not know about alternative and preventative methods of living.

 
With hypertension, kidney failure, heart disease and diabetes leading as some the most debilitating – yet often preventable – afflictions, it is odd that in the communities of color these cases keep rising. It is not a lack of education that leads to many people contracting such health problems; it is a lack of compliance. We have been taught that there are pills to treat any ailment, so we forget that ultimately we are the ones to blame for most of our health problems. Also if you contend, like popular culture, that drug companies have your best interests in mind, be advised that they do not – and will not as long as we allow ourselves to become dependent and not take responsibility for our own actions (or, more accurately, inaction). Despite the evident grimness, there are a few things that you can do to improve your health.

 

Get a check-up by a preventative-based health care promoter. This check-up will establish your baseline and help you set some goals. Seek out a professional who is familiar with both conventional and alternative health prevention formats. Some prevention may include taking temporary medications and/or herbs. At a minimum, you should get your blood pressure, cholesterol level, and blood sugar checked.

 

Spend more time sleeping and less time hooked on artificial stimuli. Overuse of caffeinated beverages and large amounts of sugar-containing substances have negative long-term health effects and can expose your body to an unhealthy stress cycle.

 

Create good habits of fluid intake and eating. A licensed nutritionist can help you in this area and can best show you which foods and beverages resonate with your personality without depriving you completely of an occasional treat.

 

Exercise all day and you will live healthy all day. The common belief is that you need at least 20 minutes per day of heart-stimulating exercise. However you may want to consider incorporating exercise into your entire day, which in the long run may yield better results than exercising one time for 20 minutes each day. Use steps rather than elevators, and carry items in your hand instead of using a shopping cart. Walk whenever possible at a comfortable yet brisk pace, and ride a bicycle to work if possible. If you drive somewhere, such as the mall, try to park as far away as possible from the entrance so that you get some more exercise. Finally taking a stroll after a meal will often help your health much more than sitting for hours after eating.

 

Manage your stress. You may think that most people have stress under control, but often the cause of sickness comes more from a constant state of tension than it does from contact to a harmful substance or germ. When under stress, your body is less capable of fighting off invaders, so practice patience and develop mindfulness to life’s little challenges. Other ways to reduce stress include meditation, prayer, acupuncture, counseling or talking through challenges, and massage therapy. All can be effective in rounding out a good health maintenance program based on prevention rather than reaction.

 

Follow steps such as these and you will find that good preventative health is rewarding and easy to achieve.

In college my 1978 Volkswagen bug had problems starting on cold days. I would sit in the driveway for ten minutes trying to get it going, but it was like trying to wake a large hibernating bear. When I discovered ether my problems were over, or so I thought. Rather than getting the “girlfriend” (as my mother would put it) fixed, I would use this “coffee for cars” to perk it up. The ether got my car “high” and I could be on my way. Unfortunately, “drugging” my car only created more problems: I was slowly killing it.

 

Like my old car, each morning many of us drug our bodies –not with ether – with coffee. Make no mistake: coffee, with its high level of caffeine, is a drug. Seen first in history in Ethiopia and Arabia, this elixir has become America’s and – to a larger extent – the world’s, wake-up drug. According to the National Coffee Association (in 2000) 54% of the population consumed, on average, more than two cups of coffee per day.

That’s quite a bit of this artificial stimulant. Caffeine also creeps up in our carbonated beverages, often matching – if not exceeding – the caffeine concentration in a morning cup of Joe. Even worse, this double-edged beverage sword sneaks into our diet – and that of our children – through the sugar saturated beverages that deliver a double punch of sugar and caffeine.

 

This combination of sugar energy and caffeine stimulation makes it difficult for both the young and old to stay attentive. Like any artificial stimulant, caffeine causes problems that our bodies have trouble adjusting to. With caffeine, the biggest problem is addiction. Once the body is hooked on coffee, it has difficulty working without it. People who are trying to cut the habit often complain of headaches, lethargy, nausea, and the inability to concentrate. The physical effects of coffee can actually last up to sixteen hours – meaning that a cup of coffee at 8:00 am can keep you awake as late as midnight.

 

It’s no surprise that coffee drinkers commonly complain of sleepless nights! And even if you don’t feel the effects, the caffeine is still wreaking havoc with your metabolic system. Another significant problem with the coffee drug is that it is a substance which, over times, causes diminished effects. The body adapts, and so with time and use you find that you need more and more to get that jolt you first enjoyed. For that reason, you’ll never attain that first-cup-of-coffee feeling again. So what can you do to wean yourself from coffee? If you love the taste of coffee, try decaffeinated coffee. Though still flavorful, these beverages don't pack the punch that exists in the full-strength version. Next, go to sleep on time. The fact is that many Americans just don't get enough sleep at night and caffeine is just an excuse. Try to get six to eight hours of uninterrupted sleep per night. Is it really worth your good health to stay up past 1:00 am and try to be fully functioning by 6:00 in the morning? If you do so regularly, over time your health will deteriorate – as will your lifespan.

 

By getting enough sleep, you will find that your body feels better and you can stay energized longer – without the peaks and valleys often associated with caffeine. Eating healthy foods will help as well. Since so many of the foods available are over processed and stripped of the nutrients that fuel you for busy days, try to consume fresh, unprocessed foods that repair the body, provide the building blocks for the immune system, and give you the energy needed to propel you through the day. To return to the Volkswagen comparison, if you put low-grade gas in your car, it will not perform as well as if you use high grade fuel. The high-grade costs a little more, but it extends the life of the car, meaning you save money (by spending a bit more) because you won’t have to pay for expensive repairs or for a new car – and your life is not as easily replaced as a car! You only have one body, so feed it high-grade food – not junk food – and you will truly extend your life.

 

As a general rule, when purchasing groceries from your local food mart, the best foods are often found on the outer rim of the stores. This is where you will find your fruits, vegetables, milks, and refrigerated juices. Finally, if you just love to have a hot beverage in the morning, try going to a naturally decaffeinated tea or Postum. Postum is just malted wheat bran and molasses, so it doesn’t have the harmful effects of coffee, but in a strange sort of way it reminds you of coffee. You will find that once you kick the coffee habit, you will stay energized longer, sleep better, and create the harmony that your mind and body crave each day.

This week we were watching an interesting program on the Discovery Health Channel about garlic and how its effect may be similar to how the body responds to the male enhancement drug Viagra. We watch this channel because it sometimes is an entertaining source of relevant health related information. All the same the topic for this episode was on the use of garlic in an attempt to improve the activity in the neither regions of a man using garlic. The scenario was that 8 middle age man suffering from erectile dysfunction would in conjunction with an exclusive fruit and vegetable diet; consume four cloves of garlic a day for 12 days.  I’m sure that you want to know what happen and we’ll get to that but first a little about how Viagra became so famous in short time.


A few years ago researcher at pharmaceutical giant Pfizer were trying to find a medication that would improve cardiovascular faction, decrease chest pain and decrease blood pressure. In one of those classic blunders that have given rise to some of the greatest medications (remember how penicillin was discovered), the drug that was invented was not that effective for what it was designed for but a side effect was increase blood flow to the male reproductive element.  The rest as they say is history but garlic may hold similar effect albeit less risk since it is naturally according.


Allium sativum L., or Garlic is in the onion family Alliaceae and according to research is one of nature most promising and readily available herbs.  According to the University of Maryland Medical website garlic is used to help prevent heart disease, including atherosclerosis (plaque buildup in the arteries that can block the flow of blood and possibly lead to heart attack or stroke), high cholesterol, high blood pressure, and to improve the immune system though the research is not definitive.  As many times impotence is associated with decrease blood flow, anything that increases this may decrease ED.  In a  study published in 2000 by the  US Department of health a Human service?, researched found that using garlic indicated some positive results in reducing the chance of cardiac complications however it did very little to decrease the level of what we might term bad cholesterol.

The thing to take way from this information is that there may be a cure for ED in nature in your local grocery story but keep in mind that that nature works a little slower that many medication so I would not expect the same results as one can expect in artificially derived meds. Also since these gents consumed more garlic at one time that most of us, one can expect some side effect but from what I have investigated these are relatively mild lease of which is breath that may strip paint.  Keep an open mind and like anything, new consult with the old family doc to make sure that it safe for you.
