Alexander Technique - San Francisco Bay Area/Peninsula
The Alexander Technique is a holistic, mind-body approach to well-being that was developed by F.M. Alexander (1869-1955) and has been in continuous use for over 100 years.
A recent study was published in the British Medical Journal (BMJ), showing dramatic reduction in low back pain through a series of lessons in the Alexander Technique. Long-term pain relief was still effective one year after the study began. BMJ, 2008;337:a884 See the BMJ video about the study, below
In real numbers, as compared to control group:
Patients went from 21 days of pain per month (control group, normal care) to 3 days of pain per month.
86% reduction in days in pain
through Alexander Technique alone (24 lessons). Quality of life improved significantly. No significant harms were reported.
About the Technique:
The Technique is based on the premise that the way we use ourselves in all our daily activities influences how well or poorly we function. It has been used to prevent injury, relieve pain, and solve many problems that are often caused by poor postural habits and repetitive stress and/or usage patterns.
It is a very gentle method of retraining our habitual ways of carrying out everyday activities, from working at a computer to dancing or playing golf. It is quieting to the system and improves how we may react to stresses on many levels. In the process, it helps restore the natural balance and poise that are the cornerstone of good health.
A proven method of self care, Alexander Technique is a set of skills that you learn to relieve pain, prevent injury and enhance performance. It empowers you, as you learn to soothe your own nervous system, release your own muscles and balance your own structure.
Here’s what students have said about back pain and the Alexander Technique:
When I first started Alexander, I had been in chronic lower back pain for 2-3 years. I have been surprised at the effects of Alexander lessons. My lower back pain started to improve within the first month and after 6 months I was pain-free for the first time in years. Alexander feels to me like something that my body had been hungry for on some very basic level. ----- Carolyn Bellinger-Kawahara, Ph.D.
Through the Alexander Technique lessons, I have learned how to decrease symptoms of arthritis and neck and back pain. This has been a significant improvement in my quality of life, without medications. One of the unexpected benefits of lessons in the Alexander Technique has been a general increased sense of well-being, with some people commenting that I look younger." ----- Dena Dickinson, RN, MS
