A Cure for Migraines: Telling the Truth

During graduate school one of my fellow classmates "Susie" suffered from horrible migraines. Susie would experience such intense migraines she would often end up in the emergency room, needing a shot of pain medicine in order to function. My heart went out to my friend and I wondered what was causing her migraines. After getting to know Susie, I found out she was in a long-term relationship with a man she didn't love.

One day I picked up Susie for class and she got in my car with a smile on her face. She then proceeded to show me a beautiful platinum diamond engagement ring she had received the past weekend. I sat there in shock, wondering what to say. I didn't know if I should congratulate Susie or ask if she should marry a guy she didn't love. I opted for the former comment and decided to wait on giving my opinion. I didn't want to rain on Susie's party since she obviously was in love with her ring. The problem was she wasn't in love with the guy who gave her the ring.

Susie remained engaged and kept pushing off the wedding date. With each passing month, Susie's migraines continued to get worse. She was missing work and overall was falling apart. What was happening to Susie? She was living a lie and the lie was causing her body to rebel in pain. The stress of not being in love with a man she was engaged to was slowly breaking Susie down phsycially and emotionally.

During our car rides to class I asked Susie why she couldn't bring herself to tell "Tony" she didn't love him. Her response was, "I don't want to hurt Tony." I told Susie she was hurting Tony even more by pretending to both love him and want to marry him when neither was the case. I went on to say that Tony deserved the truth so he could be set free and find someone who truly loved him. Susie also deserved to find someone she truly loved.

More months went by and then the pain of the lie finally got the best of Susie. She eventually mustered up the courage to tell Tony the truth. They broke off their engagement and not suprisingly, Susie's migraines went away.

When our bodies are in pain, it's a sign that something isn't right in our lives. The next time you have a migraine, headache, or other "ache," ask yourself, "What is going on in my life that could be causing this pain?"
