What is good posture anyway and why is it so important? Basically posture refers to the body's alignment and positioning with respect to the ever-present force of gravity.

Whether we are standing, sitting or lying down gravity exerts a force on our joints, ligaments and muscles. Good posture entails distributing the force of gravity through our body so no one structure is overstressed.

Having correct posture not only affects the way you look to others, but also good posture passes along many health benefits. These Health Benefits allow your organs, circulation and movement to functional at a most favorable level.  In contrast, improper sitting or standing allows the opposite to occur.

Here are a plethora of guaranteed health benefits to living longer and happier.
  • Minimize your risk of permanent neck and back problems.
  • Ensure that your joints don't wear abnormally, which can lead to Arthritis.
  • Be able to use your muscles more efficiently, because your bones and joints will be in the correct alignment.
  • Prevent your spine from becoming fixed in an abnormal position. This can lead to constricted blood vessels and nerves; problems with muscles, discs and joints; headaches, fatigue and even problems with organs and breathing.
  • Put less stress on the ligaments and muscles holding the spine's joints together, helping avoid injury.
  • Prevent avoidable Surgery!

These concerns, or as I call them anxieties, usually prevent someone from seeing a Chiropractor. And sometimes, stops the person from starting Chiropractic care after they realize they need it. Let’s see what they are and how our office has been able to ease these fears over the years.

#1: “I don’t want you to break my neck.”

Who hasn’t seen an action movie that involves the twisting of a neck and instantaneous eternal sleep (death)? Scary, right? ONLY in the Movies!!! Approximately 2-5 new patients per year have this permanently scared in their brain and refuse to at least give it a try. With the use of x-ray, exam and health history you have a better probability of getting a stroke from a scary movie than a chiropractic adjustment. The “popping sound” of the adjustment is the release of joint pressure similar to the feel and sound of your knuckle popping. The initial muscle relaxation alone after your first neck adjustment is usually enough to break this anxiety.

#2: “I don’t want to come in more than once a month.”

Treatment for any chiropractic patient is based upon the exam, x-rays, and length of symptoms. Meaning, every case is different. The overall goal of treatment is to improve the x-rays and decrease the symptoms. For example, a patient with severe, constant low back pain for over 2 years will need more care initially than a patient whose first experience with pain started 2 days ago. What helps patients ease the anxiety? Plan to come in ONLY for the exam, x-rays and consultation. Only then, decide how often YOU want treatment.

#3: “I don’t have insurance and it costs too much!”

Even in these tough economic times, about 20% of our patients pay cash for their treatment. Euclid Chiropractic treats about 300 patients per week. This allows the cost of running a practice to be spread over a plethora of patients, reducing the cost per person. Patients that pay out of pocket also seek more value out of their care by integrating MASSAGE THERAPY and sometimes EXTRA VISITS at no cost.

Patients that have followed through with their Chiropractic care have been able to overcome their concerns. After building TRUST with their Chiropractor, patients are able to experience the safety, benefits, and value of their treatment.

Over my years of practice, our patients frequently use ice and heat improperly to reduce pain.

Purpose of both Ice and Heat

Ice: used to reduce swelling or inflammation by slowing down blood flow. It can reduce pain by dulling or numbing the injured area, but it is not primarily a pain reducer.

Heat: increases blood flow which helps to deliver oxygen and nutrients and remove waste. It relaxes healthy muscles, reducing pain.

Patient in acute, intense pain says, “Hey, but heat feels better!” Doctor: “Yes and it promotes more swelling and pain. Ice it for now. ”

Have you sprained an ankle in the past? You automatically use ice to reduce swelling. I doubt your first instinct would be a heating pad.

Treating the Spine

The problem with acute back or neck pain is the non-visible swelling that occurs in the spine versus the superficial ankle joint, for example. By reducing the swelling with ice on the back or neck, you reduce the inflammation in the soft tissue as well as diminish the pressure and sensitivity of the nerves. This allows normal nerve function and accelerates the healing process.

Uses of Ice

It’s effective in acute treating sprains and strains caused by physical activity. It also helps stop nosebleeds, and can be used to reduce the severity of minor burns. Cold therapy is also effective in treating varicose veins, edemas, low blood pressure, headaches, circulatory problems and sleeplessness.

Uses of Heat

Muscle stiffness and chronic, ongoing pain are common uses of heat. It can also be used on more acute problems, such as respiratory infections, bronchitis, asthma, and circulatory problems. Heat therapy is also effective at treating cramps, muscle pain, gastric and duodenal ulcers, and rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis.

Chiropractic, which comes from the Greek words “chiros” and “praktikos” meaning "done by hand", was founded in 1895 by D. D. Palmer.   Chiropractic, which is now practiced in over 100 countries, is a well recognized health care profession used to diagnose and treat mechanical disorders of the spine and musculoskeletal system.

After completing an equivalent to a Bachelor’s Degree, a  Doctor of Chiropractic takes more hours in Anatomy, Physiology, Diagnosis and Neurology than those in typical medical school programs.

These three years of extra hours of study, require the following:

Year 1: Study of basic sciences that are the foundation of chiropractic, including: Anatomy, Physiology, Chemistry, Diagnosis and Neurology, along with Pathology and Bacteriology.

Year 2: Chiropractic Technique, X-ray and Practice Management are added.

Year 3: Devotion to caring for patients in an outpatient clinic setting as well as business preparation.

A Doctor of Chiropractic will take four National Board of Chiropractic Exams throughout their three years of study.  Upon completion, Chiropractors become licensed, qualified doctors in the United States.

Chiropractic has grown in acceptance and influence over the years.  The World Health Organization states that when "employed skillfully and appropriately, chiropractic care is safe and effective for the prevention and management of a number of health problems."
