Why can't we stop bingeing?

Almost everyone overeats on occasion, having seconds or thirds of a
holiday meal or devouring an entire bag of chips while watching a scary
movie. Sometimes, though, overeating becomes a regular occurrence,
shrouded in shame and secrecy. It's called binge-eating disorder, a
serious eating disorder in which you frequently consume unusually large
amounts of food.
When you have binge-eating disorder, you may be deeply embarrassed
about gorging and vow to stop. But you feel such a compulsion that you
can't resist the urges and continue binge eating. By the way, one of my favorite titles is from Geneen Roth who wrote: When you eat at the refrigerator pull up a chair. Ha!
So why do we start?
5 Common triggers
Client #1: Boredom and loneliness
"I
eat when I'm bored or lonely as a way to make up for what I'm missing.
Then, I get mad at myself for doing so, which causes me to eat more,
which causes me to get mad again..."
Client #2: After an argument...
"I
eat when I feel rejected, jealous, or betrayed. It helps me "numb out"
so I don't have to deal with the pain. Sometimes it seems like it makes
everything better, but more often I just feel more crappy, yet still, I
keep using food to self-medicate."
Client #3: Feeling overwhelmed.
"Eating is my reward when I get home. It's how I unwind from a stressful day."
Client #4: My family/friends eat differently
"When
I go home I always intend to stay on track, but it's hard...it usually
starts with my mom's famous brownies, from there it's all downhill."
Client #5: Yo-yo dieting.
"I was so "good" for 4 days, I barely ate, then suddenly I lost control..."
