How To Get A Good Night’s Sleep

  • High protein snacks a few hours before bed will help the brain to produce melatonin, a hormone that helps sleeping.  Try to avoid sweet snacks just before bed, as they can raise the blood sugar and prohibit sleep.

  • Listen to relaxing music or soothing nature sounds to put yourself in the sleeping mode.

  • Sleep in a room as dark as possible.  Lights disrupt your circadian rhythm and inhibit glands from producing melatonin.

  • Stay away from work and electronic gadgets one hour before going to sleep.  They stimulate your brain and prevent you from a good night’s sleep.

  • Avoid drinking too much fluid just before bedtime to minimize the need to use the bathroom while trying to fall asleep.

  • When reading before bed, avoid exciting books such as mysteries and suspense novels.

  • Always establish a night time routine…try to meditate, massage or recite prayers.  Aromatherapy could also help.
