- What is a calorie? A calorie is a unit of energy
and you need this to function. Energy is extracted from the food you
eat and transforms via your enzymes into the energy you need to pump
your heart, work your lungs and power your brain. Each of us will
require a certain number of calories to operate efficiently as human
beings. The number for each of us depends upon our age, height,
physical activities and weight. (Called basal metabolic rate)
It is measured by scientists who place food into an insulated chamber
and then place this chamber into water. The food is then burned and
the water temperature is measured. It takes one calorie to raise one
gram of water one degree centigrade.
- What does it take to loose one pound of body fat? Did
you know that to loose one pound of body fat your body needs a
deficit of 3,500 calories? If you reduced your daily calorie intake by
500 calories per day over 7 days you would reach 3,500 calories.
- Basal Metabolic Rate The Basal Metabolic Rate is a
formula for your body’s calorie needs that was developed in the early
1900’s. This forumula is still used today and it takes into account
variables such as age, gender, height, weight and physical activity.
It is considered to be an accurate yardstick for determining your
body’s basal metabolic rate to maintain your current weight and level
of physical actitivity.
