Hypnotherapy for Pain Management

It is often asked why hypnotherapy is so effective for pain management. There are many reasons why hypnosis can dramatically reduce pain. The first reason is that hypnosis is a natural anesthetic. In this state of relaxed focused attention (also known as hypnosis), the body and its pain receptors become so numb that it is possible for even minor surgery to be performed in some cases. If it has been difficult to manage pain for you, as it is for many, the practice of hypnotherapy and the applied skills of learned self-hypnosis can offer you dramatic relief.

What’s even greater is that in this state, where the body and mind are in a state of deep relaxation, the body’s natural means of healing itself become employed. This is another reason why hypnotherapy provides relief from pain. The body is always seeking its own balance. The body is constantly seeking homeostasis, where all functions of the human organism are working toward balance and optimal functioning. When we are in a state of “letting go”, relaxation, or surrender, the body naturally yields toward this state of well being. This is your natural state. No matter the cause of your pain, your body is seeking its own relief, just as you are. The body has its own innate healing capabilities. It was created to heal itself. When we remove the blockages to healing, the body will and does heal itself.

There are also specific techniques utilized during a hypnotherapy session which maximize the mind-body healing potential. Guided visualization directs both conscious and subconscious mind to maximize healing capabilities. Recognizing that the subconscious mind exists throughout the body, hypnotherapy is a powerful tool for accessing the language and signals of the body through accessing the subconscious mind. When we can communicate with the body, we can understand its messages.

When the physical body is in pain, especially for long periods of time, we can sometimes feel that the body has betrayed us. Coming to understand that the body is seeking to communicate with you through its symptoms, you can begin to move into an understanding that your body is not broken or wrong in some way, rather the body is a perfect feedback mechanism seeking to communicate with you through its symptoms. It is not difficult to access the language of the body. Through gentle, guided relaxation, these messages of the body are not only soothed, they are understood and the opportunity for healing has begun.
