I have had clients who were challenged by all the clutter in their homes and not being able to make the move to go through it and give away what is not needed; they felt "trapped" or contained in this feeling. We talked about how contractive that is to feel trapped and not be able to move.
They discovered the analogy of the contractive body to clutter; that when we are fearful we tighten our bodies and tense our muscles, there is not space, all the spaces have been closed off by contracting. Is this not like the garage that is so full of unused clutter that there is no space for the car?
What is so interesting is after several weeks of Alexander Technique sessions, finding space in the joints by allowing less muscle tension; the "body clutter" lessened. No longer did she have to "overgrip" the steering wheel while driving to work; or hold her breathe thus keeping the body in a contractive state to thread a needle or give a speech. And when she returned home, the desire to create space was there in her body and she started little by little opening up the spaces in her house by going through and giving away the clutter; she felt less contracted in her body and this carried over to her home environment.
When you create space in your body, you create space in your life!
