3 Top Roadblocks to Pregnancy for Infertile Women, from an Acupuncturist's Perspective

As an acupuncturist, I commonly see women with fertility that is diagnosed as "unexplained". According their doctors the hormones and the ovulation all appear to be normal, the husband has been checked out and is fine, but still they cannot seem to get pregnant. Asian medicine with its gift of examining some of the more subtle imbalances in a woman's body that may not show up on a lab test can point to several causes for weakness or blockage in the reproductive area that are preventing conception.

Here are the top 3 factors that may be inhibiting conception I see:

1. Too much work: meaning working long hours without attention to needs to rest or eat regularly.  Overwork can drain the kidney essence (the reserve account of vitality) in a woman's body which is necessary for reproduction.

2. Too much exercise. Women who are marathon runners or other kinds of serious athletes often suffer from infertility. While some amount of exercise is good, strenuous amount can wear out her body's energy and sometimes tax her fat supplies to a level too low to carry a baby.

3. Too much stress. Today's world can be stressful and many women suffer the brunt of this stress. In this case, the woman's flow of energy stagnates too much maintain the harmonious flow needed for conception. She will complain of irritability, pms, and menstrual cramps, but won't be able to conceive.

In some way, this all makes sense. Nature didn't intend for women with too much stress, not enough time or physical rest to carry and nurture a baby.
