After 40 weeks of pregnancy if a woman has not gone into labor, her doctor will often induce her contractions with drugs such as Pitocin. Although this is usually effective, the contractions are often more intense than they would have been and introduce new chemicals into the blood stream, something every pregnant woman should be cautious about. Remember, drugs you take to induce delivery ingested at least to some degree by your infant as well.
As an acupuncturist, I have successfully induced labor in several full term pregnant women. I use strong stimulation and some electro-stimulation on points that cause the uterus to contract and the blood and baby to flow downward. The woman generally starts labor within 24 hrs of stimulation, but the procedure can be repeated after a day or two if it is not successful the first time. Such a treatment is relatively inexpensive, safe and worth a try before using the harsh methods your doctor will employ. You will thank your acupuncturist after your doctor hands you your healthy new born baby!
