Building a successful coaching practice can take time. However, just like traveling, if you have a destination and a road map to get there, success is almost inevitable. The most important thing you can do is to specialized. Choose a specialty that's satisfying and fun for you, but also one for which there is a need. After that, establishing your coaching practice is a simple matter of building your clientele.
You may think that being a generalist is the best way to get the most coaching clients. But that turns out to not be the case. If you can specialize in a particular niche, you actually become more sought-after. Although coaches who don't specialize may believe that they can appeal to a wider audience, they actually foster the idea that "any coach will do." On the other hand, if you specialize in your coaching practice and become well-known, people seeking a coaching your specialty will come looking for you.
What specialty should you choose?
There's not exactly a mathematical formula for this.think about the areas of coaching for which you have the greatest passion or in which you feel most effective (hint: they will probably be the same areas). If you intend to specialize in your coaching practice, your daily activity should be satisfying, even fun. You'll relish the thought of doing the same type of coaching every day, and further training will be something you desire, instead of something you avoid.
At the same time, it's not entirely about you. Your chosen niche should have potential clients who have an intense perceived need for the services you offer. These clients will actively look for your coaching practice. They are also likely be an excellent source of referral business.
Before you settle on a particular niche, look for successful coaching practices already serving this clientele. The presence of others before you provides encouragement that your chosen niche is profitable. On the other hand, if you crave to be the first meeting a particular need, look for a successful niche and then focus it even tighter.
Once you've chosen your specialty, it's time to begin attracting clients.
One of the fastest and most reliable ways to build a client list is to offer something free in exchange for their contact information. This can be done through website, over the phone, or even in a workshop setting. Your willingness to provide information and benefits up front not only build your credibility, but also establishes relationships quickly. Growing your coaching practice then becomes a simple matter of expanding those relationships.
