Home insurance rates can be extremely expensive, but homeowners can make a few crucial decisions that will lower the costs of home insurance. Here, we will look at how homeowners can reduce home insurance rates significantly.

All homeowners are required to own some form of homeowners insurance. The majority of mortgage companies won’t issue a mortgage to a homeowner who has not insured his or her home. Still, homeowners can take active steps to protect their homes. Here’s how.

1.Homeowners can lower their annual premiums by 5% of more by simply installing a security system and set of smoke alarms. Homeowners need to provide proof of central monitoring (i.e. proving that the security system is tied to a central station) in order to obtain the discount.

2.Paying a higher deductible will significantly reduce the cost of annual premiums. Of course, paying a higher deductible means that the homeowner will be responsibly for fixing minor issues, such as broken windows. Still, its usually worth it to pay a higher deductible in exchange for lower premiums.

3.Shop around and acquire multiple policy discounts. Most insurance companies that offer more than one type of insurance will also multiple policy discounts.  If you qualify for one of these discounts, it’s good to take advantage of it.

4.Always make plans according to future construction plans. Remember, additions to the home may increase your monthly premiums. As long as you are aware of the upcoming costs, you can manage your policy and keep costs down.
