Holistic healing addresses the needs of the person as a whole: those of the physical body, emotional body, the mind, and soul. Sandra Maguire, Certified Ayurvedic Consultant and Reiki Master, offers ayurvedic consultations, therapies, and healing energy medicine sessions. Ayurveda is a system of medicine has been successfully practiced for thousands of years. Ayurveda is built on the principle that we are all a part of nature, and we are affected by everything around us.  Each person is a unique combination of the five elements (ether, air, water, fire, and earth) and the three energies of the body (vata, pitta, kapha). Through Ayurveda, we seek to understand the unique complexities of each individual, with the goal of achieving optimal health of a healthy body, and a peaceful mind.

At Sattva Health and Wellness, clients and staff work together to find the underlying cause of illnesses and health concerns. When working with clients, Sandra looks to correct imbalances that lie at the root of many health problems. Ayurveda is aimed at understanding what may have lead to the presentation of specific symptoms, and then bringing clients back into balance through simple, natural therapies.  Symptoms are alleviated as the body heals itself of accumulated imbalances or disease. If medication is necessary to manage a condition, clients will continue to work with their medical doctor, while Sandra explores ways to complement and enhance healing.

If you are looking to augment traditional western medicine with a holistic approach, have the desire to learn how to make daily lifestyle and dietary changes that will positively affect your long term health, and would like to develop the art of living in harmony with nature, Ayurveda may be the perfect choice for you.

Ayurveda has been effective in treating a wide variety of conditions including anxiety, depression, weight gain, digestive problems, infertility, pms and menopause, allergies, chronic headaches, and many more. Interested clients can schedule an appointment to receive a detailed consultation which may include recommendations for dietary changes, subtle adjustments to daily routine, effective exercise and yoga practice for each clients’ specific constitution, natural herbal supplements to support the body and mind, meditation and pranayama (breathing) instruction, and other beneficial lifestyle alterations.

There is a variety of beautiful ayurvedic therapies available at Sattva Health and Wellness. Shirodhara is one of the most effective healing therapies available. While the client is reclined comfortably on a massage table and covered with a blanket, warm herbalized oil is poured in a gentle stream over the forehead between the brows (also called the third eye or sthaphani marma), and in a rhythmic pattern over the forehead.  This allows for deep rest and invokes the release of tension. Shirodhara calms an overactive mind, soothes the nervous system, reduces stress, anxiety, fear, and mental exhaustion, improves sleep patterns and restores balance to body, mind and soul. This therapy synchronizes brain waves and enhances blood circulation to the brain, creating a deep sense of calm and well being.

Kati Basti is another herbal oil treatment in which a dough dam is used to retain therapeutic oil in the lower region of the back. This treatment provides great relief to clients experiencing back and abdominal pain. The purifying oils are absorbed by the muscles and encourage greater strength and flexibility. Similarly, Griva Basti is applied to the cervical region of the neck to treat chronic neck and shoulder pain, while janu basti specifically addresses the knees. The superior quality of the oils is key to the effectiveness of these treatments, and Sattva Health and Wellness uses only the best therapeutic herbalized oils available.

If you are interested in experiencing the numerous benefits of an Ayurvedic lifestyle or Energy Medicine, and are ready to make changes that can significantly improve your quality of life, please contact Sandra Maguire for an appointment. We will work together to support you on your personalized wellness journey toward optimal health and happiness. Call 207-838-1602 or email sandra@sattvahealthandwellness.com

What is Ayurveda?

Ayurveda is the sister science to yoga.  Practiced for over 5,000 years, it is the oldest system of medicine successfully practiced in the world today. Originating in ancient India, this medical tradition states that each person’s path toward optimal health is unique – because each person is unique in every day, season and time of their life.

Ayurveda is a holistic system of medicine, meaning it approaches wellness from a mind, body, spirit perspective. Holistic medicine looks beyond the physical body for healing. We treat the entire person, not just the disease or it's symptoms, with effective, natural therapies. Each and every person is seen as an individual from every perspective, and ayurvedic treatment plans are tailored to each individual.  Ayurveda seeks to understand the the root cause of an illness, and then cultivate health and wellness by addressing it's cause.

As a preventative medicine, Ayurveda teaches you how to recognize imbalances before they manifest into disease. There are always signs and symptoms about what is going on within us, and through Ayurveda we learn to pay attention and listen, and then make the necessary corrections as a form of prevention and/or treatment. This principle focuses on understanding your particular body & mind constitution (prakriti), and the unique nature of your imbalance at any given time (vikruti).

Your treatment plan may include dietary changes, lifestyle and daily routine adjustments, yoga, meditation, aroma therapy, massage therapy, and other natural therapies, such as herbs. In order to successfully implement these Ayurvedic principles into your life, regular follow-up visits with your practitioner are recommended until your desired results are achieved.  The goal of all Ayurvedic programs is to create within your body and mind an optimum environment for healing to take place and to maximize your body’s ability to heal itself.

Ayurveda is not about immediate results, although you will see and feel many immediate benefits.  It will take time to restore full balance, particularly after years of living out of balance.  Ayurveda is not a passive form of therapy, but rather requires each individual to take responsibility for his or her own health, with the guidance of the practitioner's understanding.

Understanding Energy Work as an Alternative Path to Well Being
Sandra Maguire, RMT

I am absolutely fascinated by Energy Work!
Imagine......we can affect the human body at extraordinarily subtle levels, and assist it in the healing process. Our bodies have incredible wisdom about how to create and maintain wellness within. Energy work is a holistic approach to creating balance in mind, body, and spirit.

We are all energetic beings~a manifestation of the life force energy that exists in every living thing on the planet. Every nerve impulse in the body is a firing of energy! When we are energetically blocked, physical disease as well as emotional/mental/spiritual distress can set in. An energy work practitioner understands and works with the energy centers (chakras), energy channels (meridians) and/or the energetic field (aura) of the body.

The three types of energy work I practice are Reiki, Quantum Touch, and Therapeutic Touch.
Unlike massage therapy, Reiki is done by gently laying on of the practitioner's hands, or no touch at all (the practitioner's hands are held a few inches above the body in the energetic field). You can imagine the practitioner as a conduit of life force energy, and the client's body receives or releases exactly what is needed. There is no kneading of muscles or physical manipulation, and the work is done fully clothed. Reiki has a profound effect on calming the nervous system, leaving one feeling deeply peaceful and relaxed, yet rejuvenated. Much to their surprise, 9 out of 10 of my clients fall asleep during their session!

Quantum Touch uses resonance and entrainment to facilitate healing. The practitioner learns to raise his or her vibration (through breath work and visualization techniques) and creates a high level of energy in their hands. When that energy field is placed around an area of pain, stress, inflammation, or disease, that part of the body will entrain to the higher frequency of the practitioner, and allow one’s own biological intelligence to do whatever healing it deems necessary. QT is a simple technique that can facilitate remarkable results.

Therapeutic Touch, ironically, involves no touch at all. The practitioner uses the hands to facilitate a flow of the human energy field (or aura), unknotting and smoothing it out, and encouraging energy to flow though the body. Used alone or with other forms of energy work, TT has a very soothing effect and gently helps restore balance to the system.

Energy work practitioners do not diagnose conditions, nor suggest changes to your current treatment plan with your medical doctor. Total wellness can be achieved through a combination of approaches, and any of these modalities can be a wonderful adjunct to achieving good health.
If you are curious about exploring energy work, I invite you to try with me!

Namaste,

Sandra
