If you happen to read Dr. Barlow’s book on the Alexander Technique (The Alexander Principle, Arrow Books, London 1987) you’ll surely notice how right in the beginning he explains that:  “Use Affects Functioning.”   This is a main Alexander Principle.  Let me bring a few examples:  If I use my ribs-muscles in a contracted way – it’ll affect the functioning of my lungs, and my breathing will become constricted.  If I walk with effort – it’ll affect the functioning of my legs, and my walking will become rigid.  The way I use my eyes will affect my vision.  The way I use my thinking will affect different aspect of my life and my overall functioning.  Alexander chose the word “use” very carefully.  As human beings we posses certain skills, abilities, and senses which can help us improve our daily functioning.  However, in order to improve and develop we have to learn how to Use these skills, abilities, and senses.  With the Alexander Technique we find out how to use our kinesthetic sense in such a way that our movements will become more refined; How to use our observational skills in such a way that we’ll be able to detect our tension patterns and stop them;  And How use our thinking-in-activity skills in such a way that we’ll be able to free ourselves from preconceived ideas.  To learn more Join Shula Sendowski’s introductory workshop:  June 26th between 3:00 – 6:00 pm in the “In The Mudra” Yoga and Dance studio, 21835 Sherman Way, Canoga Park 91303.  Cost is $40 if you pre-register or $50 at the door.  Phone 818-340-YOGA (9642) studio, or 818-620-0132 mobile.  To receive additional information e mail Shula.Alexander@gmail.com
