East indians and heart disease
(0)
Sunday, May 10, 2009
I went to an indian restaurant for Mother's day today. The food was of relatively healthy selections. Most of us know that most wellness and holistic practices stem from Asia - yoga, ayurveda, naturopathic medicine, etc.
So it puzzled me on why it is east indians are said to have heart related problems, since the common causes in the developed world seems to be smoking, drinking, bad/poor dietary habits, non-exercise. Well here it is:
A study among Asian Indian men showed that half of all heart attacks in this population occur under the age of 50 years and 25 percent under the age of 40, according to the Indian organization, Medwin Heart Foundation.
The research, published in January in the journal Nature Genetics, explains how a genetic mutation affecting four per cent of Indians and one per cent of the world's population, leads to a formation of an abnormal protein. This protein often results in cardiomyopathy, a disease that causes deterioration of the heart muscle. A
growing number of Indians are at risk of heart disease because of a genetic mutation that affects one in 25 people in India. The mutation basically guarantees the development of the disease, and people may suffer heart attacks at an earlier age, often without warning. Scary stuff right?! But indians aren't the only ones to have a socio-genetic disease. G
enetic mutations found within specific communities are nothing new. Ashkenazi Jews and Hispanic women, for example, are at higher risk of developing breast cancer in a 2007 scientific publishing.
What this should mean to you is that, yes- you should do your best to maintain a healthy lifestyle by whatever means..but certain things are simply unavoidable and may have nothing to do with your lifestyle choices. So, make the best of life by enjoying everything
in moderation

and find your happiness
