At this very moment health officials around the world are trying to take precautions without inciting panic from a new possible Swine Flu Outbreak. The Swine influenza, or “swine flu”, is a highly contagious acute respiratory disease of pigs, caused by one of several swine influenza A viruses. Swine influenza viruses are most commonly of the H1N1 subtype, but other subtypes are also circulating in pigs (e.g., H1N2, H3N1, H3N2). In this case, the virus is type H1N1.
The swine flu, that start with first cases in Mexico City, has spread to several countries around the world. Around 18 countries have officially reported cases of influenza A(H1N1) infection. In addition to the 160 deaths in Mexico City, the virus is believed to have sickened 2,498 people across Mexico. A toddler who succumbed in Texas became the first death outside Mexico.
Is there a human vaccine to protect from swine influenza?
As World Health Organization (WHO) respond in 25 April 2009;
"No. Influenza viruses change very quickly and the match between the vaccine and the circulating virus is very important to give adequate protective immunity to vaccinated people."......"Current seasonal influenza vaccine produced based on WHO recommendation does not contain swine influenza virus. It is unknown whether the seasonal vaccines can provide any cross protection to ongoing swine influenza virus infection in the United States and Mexico."
