So called healthcare in the United States is in trouble. It isn't working, and throwing more money at it won't help either. The problem isn't that there are 49 million uninsured people in the US, the problem is that the healthcare system is broken. The US spends $1.4 trillion per year on "health care" more than many of the other industrialized nations combined, yet our health is ranked as 40th in the world! We spend many times more than all the other countries in the world, yet we rank at the bottom of the industrialized nations! Something isn't working here...

I think it all starts at the level of government, the CDC keeps records every year of what kills us as Americans, year after year, heart disease shows up at the top of their list, followed closely by cancer. In all heart disease claims about 700k lives each year and cancer 550k. The problem here is not that heart disease and cancer are not reported accurately, the problem lies in that the true leading cause of death in the US is never reported with the other causes. Chances are, unless you are in healthcare or have heard one of my talks, you have never heard of the actual leading cause of death in the USA. Iatrogenic disease and death are the leading cause of death in the US, claiming at least 800k lives each year! But what is it? Iatrogenic is defined as induced inadvertently by a physician or surgeon or by medical treatment or diagnostic procedures<an iatrogenic rash>.

So, the very people who we expect to defend and create health for us are the ones responsible for more deaths than heart disease?!?! Dr Lucian Leape was the first to bring light to this little known and even less reported fact. His 2000 article in JAMA first pointed out that modern medicine is not always what is good for us. More recently a group of MDs and PhDs did an extensive and thorough literature review titled "Death by Medicine" where they discovered that the numbers are MUCH higher than Dr Leape had even thought. This fully referenced report shows the number of people having in-hospital, adverse reactions to prescribed drugs to be 2.2 million per year. The number of unnecessary antibiotics prescribed annually for viral infections is 20 million per year. The number of unnecessary medical and surgical procedures performed annually is 7.5 million per year. The number of people exposed to unnecessary hospitalization annually is 8.9 million per year.

These are scary numbers, and is it any wonder that more and more people in the US and the world are recognizing that the MD isn't the sacred being he/she used to be, and that taking more and more medications will not bring good health. People are turning to "alternatives" in droves, more than 3 times the visits to so-called alternative practitioners than to conventional medical practitioners over several years and growing...hmmm, so who is the alternative?

I guess the bottom line is buyer beware!

Upper cervical care is a rapidly growing form of chiropractic that focuses on the intimate relationship between the first two bones in the neck, called the upper cervical spine, and a vital portion of the nervous system, known as the brain stem. This relationship is absolutely essential to the body’s ability to preserve and restore health. The brain stem is the control center that extends from the brain down through an opening in the base of your skull, making it vulnerable to injuries or irritation around the upper neck.

The brain stem works very much like a telephone cable with thousands of individual wires or nerve fibers sending signals back and forth between the brain and spinal cord to every cell, organ and system in the body. Every nerve impulse between the brain and the body must pass through the brain stem.

The top two vertebrae, the Atlas and Axis, are especially vulnerable to injury or misalignment because they are the most mobile segments of the spine. Misalignment here can produce nerve irritation to the brain stem which, in turn, can affect nearly all vital functions and systems in the body. If neglected, an upper cervical misalignment can lead to irreversible spinal degeneration, chronic ill health, and a shorter life expectancy.

Upper cervical misalignments can be caused by falls, auto accidents, sports, on-the-job injuries, concussions, physical or emotional stress, poor posture, and even birth trauma.
