Pain Killers (NSAIDs) and Nutritional Deficiencies

Monday, August 10, 2009
Did you know continuous use of over the counter anti-inflammatories (NSAIDs) can deplete your body of essential nutrients? Statistics show women tend to reach for  Motrin, Aleve, Aspirin and others more often than men do; This is  due to different factors such as cramps, estrogen related headaches and migraines, fatigue, environmental toxins, poor diet, stress, the list is endless.  A team of pharmacists (Drs. Pelton,  et. al.) studied over 150 medications and their impact in daily metabolic functions; NSAID’s were proven to impair the absorption of essential nutrients such as Calcium, B vitamins, Zinc, among others. Unfortunately the potential health problems related to nutritional depletion is something we don’t think about as we believe a balanced diet delievers all the nutrients we need.

More often than not, we are totally unaware of the several factors that  can affect proper absorption of the foods we eat and when those health problems  such as osteoporosis, anemia,  lower immunity, reduced antioxydant protection (hint, hint.. make us age faster!) begin to show signs and symptoms very rarely do we attribute them to nutritional depletion.  Through advance clinical testing at our practice we are able to determine the exact nutraceutical therapy required to best fit your body’s needs.
