Too Much Caffeine? Go Figure

(HealthScoutNews) -- Without realizing it, you could easily be consuming enough caffeine to be affecting your sleep or other aspects of your health. Why? Because consumption of a little of this, a little of that and a bit of something else containing this stimulant will put far more in your system, far faster, than you may realize.

In addition to coffee, tea and many soft drinks, caffeine also is contained in chocolate and many prescription and non-prescription drugs. Scientists say that a combined consumption of more than 250 mg of caffeine a day can increase your metabolism, raise your blood pressure and heart rate, and accelerate breathing. It also can offset the effects of sleep deprivation, according to the National Sleep Foundation.  www.sleepfoundation.org

Because caffeine content levels vary greatly from one food or beverage to another, differences based on such things as the type of coffee bean, brands of coffee, the way coffee is brewed and the way caffeine is presented. This can be a highly valuable tool for those who want to avoid caffeine for health or dietary reasons.

Surgery Smarts

(HealthScoutNews) --All surgery carries risks, so it's best to know as much as you can before hopping onto an operating table.

In addition to getting a second opinion, the U.S. Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality suggests you ask your physician these questions:

  • Why do I need the operation?
  • Are there alternatives to surgery?  I encourage people to look into acuputure, body work and activator chiropratic...while others swear by homeopathic and naturapathic techniques.
  • How will surgery benefit me?
  • What are the risks?
  • What are the risks for not having the surgery?
  • How many of these operations have you performed before? Interview you surgeon. Do you trust a "D" student to literlly handle your heart or brain or knee? Does your surgeon have references? You expect them from your maid or babysitter.
  • What kind of anesthesia will I need?
  • Where will the surgery be done?
  • How long will it take me to recover?
  • How much will it cost?
  •  I also encourgae people to get a personal testionmonial from at least one of their sugoen's former patient who survived the same procedure

In Praise of Chocolate
by Susan Moores, M.S., R.D.

Chocolate.

Is there a sweeter word in the dictionary? But it's destined to be an unrequited love, isn't it? How can you have a healthy relationship when it dumps all those calories - and guilt - on you?

Brace yourself for a surprise - if you stick to cocoa, or choose chocolate that contains more heart-healthy fats, you can make it work. Here's the dish:

  • Cocoa (and thus chocolate) contains flavonoids - the same headline-grabbing health-promoting substances found in tea, red wine and soy foods.
  • Studies suggest that chocolate's flavonoids may help protect against heart disease and stroke by slowing blood's ability to clot, and by reducing the potential for plaque build-up inside artery walls.
  • Cocoa's main fat, stearic acid, may be heart-healthy. Our bodies convert it to a monounsaturated fat.
  • In carefully controlled studies, when individuals ate chocolate bars rich in stearic acid, their blood cholesterol levels didn't go up.

Just One Catch...

There's a hitch, though: The good stuff is in the cocoa. But most chocolate is also rich in saturated fats - the kind that raises "bad" LDL cholesterol. Products made with partially hydrogenated vegetable oils also contain cholesterol-raising trans fatty acids. Do we need to mention all the sugar and calories, too?

The Smart Way To Eat Chocolate

For an occasional treat, choose dark chocolate. It's got slightly more flavonoids and proportionately more stearic acid than milk chocolate.

A 3/4-oz. bar of milk chocolate has a whopping 15 grams of fat, with less than 4 grams of it from stearic acid. The equivalent dark bar has about the same amount of fat with 6 grams of stearic acid. Still no health bargain, but a little better!

For a more common indulgence, try real cocoa. Make hot cocoa with skim milk or low-fat soymilk - and use it in cooking

Chocolate lovers surely will get weak at the knees for our Valentine Cake. It's got enough real cocoa to provide a deep chocolate experience. When you whisper sweet nothings into your valentine's ear, though, don't mention that this gift is designed not only to win a heart, but also to keep it strong.

This is from a hand out for clients from a Massage Center I once work with...

Your Health: WATER OR COKE? A REAL EYE OPENER.

We all know that water is important but I've never seen it written down like this before.

WATER:
1. 75% of Americans are chronically dehydrated.
2. In 37% of Americans, the thirst mechanism is so weak that it is often mistaken for hunger.
3. Even MILD dehydration will slow down one's metabolism as much as 3%.
4. One glass of water will shut down midnight hunger pangs for almost 100% of the dieters studied in a University of Washington study.
5. Lack of water, the #1 trigger of daytime fatigue.
6. Preliminary research indicates that 8-10 glasses of water a day could significantly ease back and joint pain for up to 80% of sufferers.
7. A mere 2% drop in body water can trigger fuzzy short-term memory, trouble with basic math, and difficulty focusing on the computer screen or on a printed page.
8. Drinking 5 glasses of water daily decreases the risk of colon cancer by 45%, plus it can slash the risk of breast cancer by 79%, and one is 50% less likely to develop bladder cancer.

COKE:
1. In many states (in the USA) the highway patrol carries two gallons of Coke in the trunk to remove blood from the highway after a car accident.
2. You can put a T-bone steak in a bowl of coke and it will be gone in two days.
3. To clean a toilet: Pour a can of Coca-Cola into the toilet bowl and let the "real thing" sit for one hour, then flush clean. The citric acid in Coke removes stains from vitreous china.
4. To remove rust spots from chrome car bumpers: Rub the bumper with a rumpled-up piece of Reynolds Wrap aluminum foil dipped in Coca-Cola.
5. To clean corrosion from car battery terminals: Pour a can of Coca-Cola over the terminals to bubble away the corrosion.
6. To loosen a rusted bolt: Applying a cloth soaked in Coca-Cola to the bolt for several minutes.
7. To remove grease from clothes: Empty a can of coke into a load of greasy clothes, add detergent, and run through a regular cycle. The Coca-Cola will help loosen grease stains. It will also clean road haze from your windshield.

FOR YOUR INFORMATION
1. The active ingredient in Coke is phosphoric acid. Its pH is 2.8. It will dissolve a nail in about 4 days. Phosphoric acid also leaches calcium from bones and is a major contributor to the rising increase in osteoporosis.
2. To carry Coca-Cola syrup (the concentrate) the commercial truck must use the Hazardous material place cards reserved for Highly corrosive materials.
3. The distributors of coke have been using it to clean the engines of their trucks for about 20 years!

NOW THE QUESTION IS, WATER OR COKE

"A true friend doesn't care what's on the outside or what everyone thinks of you.   They care about what you are like on the inside."

Drink Water Before You Get Thirsty.

As we age, thirst becomes a less sensitive indicator of dehydration. Up to half of all Americans suffer chronic mild dehydration that can cause fatigue, headache and loss of appetite. Women should aim for about nine cups of fluids daily; men should try for 12. Drinking more than six glasses of water each day cuts the risk of developing bladder cancer in half. Some evidence suggests that staying well hydrated reduces the risk of colon and breast cancer.

The Liver-Gallbladder Flush - Cleanse

As prescribed by William Donald Kelley, DDS, in 1981.
Dr. Kelley is the author of "One Answer to Cancer"

INSTRUCTIONS
(Required items are capitalized.)

Preparation: Drink as much Organic (or 100% pure) APPLE JUICE as comfortable, for 5 - 6 days before the liver flush, in order to soften gall stones. For maximum softening, add PHOSFOOD drops (ortho-phosphoric acid) to the apple juice, for a total of 60 drops per day.

Rinse your teeth after taking the ortho-phosphoric acid: Brush them briefly with a BAKING SODA solution (or Milk of Magnesia), to neutralize the acid.

"Phosfood Liquid" is from Standard Process Inc., Palmyra, WI 53156 (http://www.standardprocess.com/ ).
It is sold by some homeopathic pharmacies, vitamin suppliers, and by some health practitioners. "Super Phos 30" is a similar product.

START -> 3 hours following dinner, and 7 hours before bed, typically on a Saturday. (For an 11 pm bedtime, finish eating dinner by 1 pm.) Take 2 Table-spoons (1 oz.) EPSOM SALTS, dissolved in 6 oz. cool water. Then rinse your mouth with water. (Use a "shaker jar" to dissolve the Epsom salts. The taste is much less objectionable with cool water.) Drink more water, as desired... Epsom salts are MgSO4 -- magnesium sulfate -- an intestinal purge, and also a muscle relaxant for the bile ducts and the gall bladder, to prevent cramps and retention of gall stones. Epsom salts are available in drug stores.

Hour 2 -> Optional, but always to be used if "stomach cramps" should occur during the liver flush. (This is rare when using epsom salts. Cramps would indicate that stones are lodged in, and blocking liver ducts.)
However, this step is very beneficial in ALL cases, to stimulate the liver's release of waste and bile.
Begin with several plain, warm-water enemas - then follow with a 4 cup ORGANIC COFFEE enema.
Use 1 Table-spoon (1/2 oz.) coffee per cup, drip-filtered. Dissolve 1/2 cup (4 oz.) EPSOM SALTS into the hot coffee, then cool the coffee down to 98 - 100 degrees F. (body temperature) before using. (You can rapidly cool the pan in a sink of cold water.) Retain the coffee enema for 10 - 15 minutes, while relaxing in a reclining position on a floor mat.

Hour 3 -> Take 1 Table-spoon (1/2 oz.) EPSOM SALTS, dissolved in 4 oz. cool water. Then rinse your mouth with water. Drink more water, as desired...

Hour 4.5 -> (Optional) This step is used to increase bile flow, which helps dislodge stones deep in the liver ducts. This step also helps to eliminate hunger. Eat: 8 oz. CREAM on fresh berries or FRUIT, mixed. (organic heavy cream, without carrageenan) (frozen berries are optional if necessary)
or: These variations have also worked: 8 oz. CREAM and 6 - 8 oz. fruit KEFIR, mixed.
or: 16 - 32 oz. vanilla HIGH-FAT ICE CREAM. (quality ice cream, without carrageenan)

Hour 7 -> Bedtime -- Have the required items prepared : Have a TIMER handy, and also ALKA-SELTZER "GOLD".

Take 4 oz. (1/2 cup) room-temp. Organic OLIVE OIL, followed by 4 oz. fresh-squeezed LEMON JUICE.  Olive oil, taken following the above procedure, causes the liver ducts and the gall bladder to forcefully contract, and expel their collection of gall gravel and gall stones. (The acid lemon juice speeds the transit of the olive oil thru the stomach and into the duodenum, which helps prevent or minimize nausea.) Next: Rinse your teeth: Brush them briefly with a BAKING SODA solution (or Milk of Magnesia), to neutralize the acid of the lemon juice.

*** Go Immediately to Bed, "face down." Pull your right knee fully upwards, towards your right shoulder. A pillow under your left shoulder will help. Now relax into this position, and then shift your weight to your right side. Keep your right knee held fully upwards, to your chest. Using a TIMER, hold this position for 30 minutes. (You can briefly stretch your right leg, if necessary.) Gall bladder contractions and expulsion of stones will occur at this time. These can often be felt and heard. Optional, but helpful: Massage your gall bladder with your finger tips, up under your right ribs. After 30 minutes - relax, stretch out, and go to sleep.

If any nausea or acid-reflux is felt during the night, get up and immediately take ALKA-SELTZER "GOLD" in water (the "Gold" type contains no aspirin). This is safe and effective.

The following morning, immediately do the following : Take 2 Tea-spoons (1/3 oz.) EPSOM SALTS, dissolved in 3 oz. cool water. Next, drink 8 - 12 ounces of water. Later, drink more water or orange juice, as desired. Wait 2 - 3 hours before eating a light breakfast.

Plan to repeat the liver flush at least 6 times, especially  when large gall stones (1/2 to 1+ inches across) are expelled -- or when there is a large volume of stones (more than about 1/4 cup).
If few (or no) gall stones are seen, this is OK -- however this is usually a false negative. Repeat the flush in 4 - 6 weeks.

When a large volume of gall stones is seen, the liver flush should be repeated in 2 weeks.

Generally, the liver flush is repeated at 2 - 4 week intervals until the volume of gall stones seen (each time) has been greatly reduced. This can require 10 - 15 flushes, or more, because your liver will be "pulling" cholesterol out of your body, where it may have accumulated for many years or decades.

After the initial series, repeat the liver flush 2 - 4 times per year, for "maintenance."

Liver cleanse - Gallbladder cleanse - Liver flush - NO surgery

The Oasis Café is located at 142 W. York Street in the York Building at the corner of York, Boush, and Brambleton in downtown Norfolk, VA.  Enter on the first floor facing Boush Street.  Richie and Keith and Lisa have hosted O-B classes there since Dr. Shinall was a coordinator in 2001. It’s a little breakfast and lunch diner catering to office workers Mondays through Fridays and catering private parties on weekends. When we are there for class on Saturdays and Sundays they tell passers by that they are closed for a “private party” and that’s what the energy is: a private personal “dance” party from the wallpaper to your soul.

Friday class participants need to park in the city deck across the street after they unload their tables and gear by the front door of the Oasis at the York Building parking lot. Don’t be afraid to ask for help getting them into the banquet/classroom. The city parking deck is $12.00 a day now. I remember when it was $5. Saturdays and Sundays we can park in the lot adjoining the café entered from Boush and seen from Brambleton one way, the other way and around the block….Downtown with all of its progress under construction.

Ortho-bionomy Class times at the Oasis Cafe are from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm.

Once settled in to the café Richie serves breakfast from 8:30 until class starts. Some of us know the menu and will call enroute and have a hot breakfast waiting for us on the bar upon arrival. On Friday class dates it is a business and we our herded into the banquet room where they have coffee, water and tea set up for us. There is a bottomless mug for $2 a day. On Saturdays and Sundays we are the Oasis Café staff helping ourselves to beverages and salad dressings getting those "I want to have my own restaurant" urges released. Those of us who didn’t brown bag or make 1:00 lunch dates with our spouses place our lunch order by 11:00 for more “Private Party” with lunch @ 1:00 topped off with Keith’s luscious cakes and Richie’s coveted brownies with and without nuts.  Many times FO-B members or Mid-Atlantic Friends of O-B (O-B junkies) will join us for lunch. We keep all of our food orders on a piece of paper by the register (including take out for the evenings or the ride home) with our name on it to “cash out“ with Richie on Sunday afternoon (or that afternoon for one day participants) with CASH or CHECK ONLY.

During business hours women are reminded not to use the ”Men’s room”, which they can on Saturdays and Sundays to avoid lost class time. Private parties are such a purge. If you notice the paper being low let us know.

Class comfort can be a challenge in unseasonable weather since the kitchen and class room thermostats are interrelated; be sure to dress in layers you can easily peel on and off. BE SURE TO TELL THE INSTRUCTOR, COORDINATOR or Richie IF YOU ARE UNCOMFORTABLE IN ANY WAY!  Most Oasis Classes start with an opening circle in the mornings. We can leave our tables and non-valuables safely overnight; concluding with a closing circle and certificate distribution Sunday afternoon. Those of us with the shortest drives home and wishing this would never end stick around after the group hugs (or not pending your safe and comfort boundaries) and vacuum and help Richie restore the classroom to a restaurant again.

For those of you from out of town that couldn’t acquire home hospitality, there is a brand new Marriott across the street and the Radisson is walking distance with free airport shuttle. While many who drive get off season ocean front rooms in Virginia Beach on-line.

Saturday night many time class members will dine out and or catch a movie enmass and catch up with old times and future dreams to share. If you are not personally invited, don't hesitate to invite yourself.

Class participants are encouraged to be mucho hydrated the three days prior to and the three days post class to minimize the intensity of class work purges.

O-B classes at the Oasis Café are my favorite non- rural or non-tropical venue. It’s a "private party" at HOME.

"Supposedly anyone over 35 yrs old should have gotten it in the '70s and the flu hits infants and children more than the elderly and those of us with chronic diseases " Rev. Whitedove

Prevent Swine Flu - Good Advice

Dr. Vinay Goyal is an MBBS,DRM,DNB (Intensivist and Thyroid specialist) having clinical experience of over 20 years. He has worked in institutions like Hinduja Hospital , Bombay Hospital , Saifee Hospital , Tata Memorial etc.. Presently, he is heading our Nuclear Medicine Department and Thyroid clinic at Riddhivinayak Cardiac and Critical Centre, Malad (W).

The following message given by him, I feel makes a lot of sense and is important for all to know

The only portals of entry are the nostrils and mouth/throat. In a global epidemic of this nature, it's almost impossible to avoid coming into contact with H1N1 in spite of all precautions. Contact with H1N1 is not so much of a problem as proliferation is.

While you are still healthy and not showing any symptoms of H1N1 infection, in order to prevent proliferation, aggravation of symptoms and development of secondary infections, some very simple steps, not fully highlighted in most official communications, can be practiced (instead of focusing on how to stock N95 or Tamiflu):

 1. Frequent hand-washing (well highlighted in all official communications).

 2. "Hands-off-the-face" approach. Resist all temptations to touch any part of face (unless you want to eat, bathe or slap).

 3. *Gargle twice a day with warm salt water (use Listerine if you don't trust salt). *H1N1 takes 2-3 days after initial infection in the throat/ nasal cavity to proliferate and show characteristic symptoms. Simple gargling prevents proliferation. In a way, gargling with salt water has the same effect on a healthy individual that Tamiflu has on an infected one. Don't underestimate this simple, inexpensive and powerful preventative method.

4. Similar to 3 above, *clean your nostrils at least once every day with warm salt water. *Not everybody may be good at Jala Neti or Sutra Neti (very good Yoga asanas to clean nasal cavities), but *blowing the nose hard once a day and swabbing both nostrils with cotton buds dipped in warm salt water is very effective in bringing down viral population.*

5. *Boost your natural immunity with foods that are rich in Vitamin C (Amla and other citrus fruits). *If you have to supplement with Vitamin C tablets, make sure that it also has Zinc to boost absorption.

6. *Drink as much of warm liquids (tea, coffee, etc) as you can. *Drinking warm liquids has the same effect as gargling, but in the reverse direction. They wash off proliferating viruses from the throat into the stomach where they cannot survive, proliferate or do any harm.

I suggest you pass this on to your entire e-list.  You never know 20 who might pay attention to it - and STAY ALIVE because of it.
