Meet Lily...
Lily Lam, CPCC
Born in Hong Kong and immigrated to the U.S. in 1981 with my family. I settled in the Chinatown/North Beach District of San Francisco, California.
- I spent the early 80's in Chinese-English immersion programs within the public school system and learned how to best "fit in."
During the evenings, I attended Chinese school to retain my native language and culture. In between was the "stay out of trouble" play time with other neighborhood kids or waited at a local sweatshop, where my mother was a seamstress making eighty cents per garment assembled.
- With a limited education and the language barrier, my parents held multiple jobs and did what they thought were possible to protect and provide for the family.
- Both of my parents were janitors, in addition, my father was a butcher in Chinatown and my mother a seamstress and housekeeper.
- They attended adult school in the evening with the the goal to attain U.S. citizenship for the family.
- To survive together as a family, my siblings and I understood our roles and responsibilities; which included being young janitors and housekeepers.
I believe I did my best to be a "good" daughter"; raised with the values and strength of the traditional Chinese culture. I was taught that real accomplishment requires sacrifice, hard work, and persistence. Live for the sake and survival of the family. I was not aware of the resources available to me to practice self expression, develop confidence, and my voice to the world.
