Aila Accad, RN is a well respected expert in stress management and she is known far and wide as the De-Stress Expert!

Recently, we were discussing via email her new programs, Motivational Speaking engagements and the subject of her new book - coming soon.

As an altMD VIP, Aila was asking about how she could further leverage the altMD Platform.  There are many new features now and I was bringing her up-to-speed on the terrific marketing functionality the altMD Team has recently launched.

I recommended to Aila and definitely recommend to all our VIPs, there is no better activity right now than Blogging.  In the Web 2.0 world, Blogging on the altMD Platform helps drive new leads to you, establishes you and your brand as a thought leader in your particular specialty, and allows you to reach more people with your message and expand your sphere of influence.

If you were in Blog-Mode now, and a stress expert like Aila, I would be sending you an article I just found on MSN and recommend you Blog about it.

Why??  It’s topical.  It’s consumer-oriented but also has meaning for other Wellness Professionals.  By your analysis and Blog post, you establish your brand as an expert – it is YOU who is commenting on the article’s content and why it makes sense or not, and how it impacts patients/clients.

Have you started Blogging on altMD yet?  Feel free to connect with me at any time - we would love to get you started on your Blogging and help you join the online health care conversation!

Classically, “marketing” is usually a part of an overall business plan.  Marketing concerns a number of both formal and informal disciplines, including: product development, promotion, distribution, and pricing.

Marketing Objectives: Whatever your business, modality or specialty – you probably have (and definitely need) some Marketing Objectives.  Marketing goals or objectives are best expressed with an associated number so you can track your results and progress.  For example:

  • I want to double my revenue.
  • I want to get five new patients every month.
  • I want to sell $900 worth of supplements to current patients.
  • I want to increase my new patient referrals to at least 10 per quarter.

Marketing Strategy:  Your approach to meeting your objectives is called your Marketing Strategy.  Your strategy explains how your objectives will be achieved, usually within a stated timeframe. Marketing Strategy determines your choice of target market segments, brand positioning, marketing mix, and allocation of your resources.  For example:

  • I will to double my revenue in 6 months by focusing on referrals from Infertility Specialists.  (Relevant for an Acupuncturist.)
  • I will to spend 6 hours a month during free time Blogging on my altMD site about the benefits of Personal Development Training for busy Holistic Practitioners.  (Relevant for Coach Ellen Cahill.)
  • I will do 1 In-Service a week during lunch hour in local MD offices; during my presentation, I will be giving a hand massage to one of the staff – while I speak on the benefits of massage in stress management.  (Relevant for a Massage Therapist.)
  • I will call 3 local talk show hosts when they are off-the-air in April to try to interest them in putting me on a segment of their show.  (Relevant for many Specialists.)

Marketing Tactics:  The actual things you must do or the items that you must create – in support of your strategy – to meet your objectives – are your Marketing Tactics.

  • I will create a brochure promoting my new services (which will help me when I talk with targeted Infertility Specialists which I am doing in order to get me five new patients a month.)
  • I will use Google Maps to identify contact info for local MDs and call a few every day (in order to set-up my In-Services which will hopefully lead to an increase in referrals to my practice – and help me reach my goal of 10 new referrals per quarter.)
  • I will conduct research online about the various Holistic Practitioners in my area and learn more about their specialties (in preparation for my Blogging which should drive new visitors to my site in order to help me double my revenue this year.)
  • I will listen to local talk shows and call station program managers and find out what they are looking for (so I can get on the radio and get more press to drive more patients to me so they will buy my supplements.)

Marketing is a lot like what you do.  There is a proven system.  There is a step-wise approach.  If you follow the basic rules, you will have a predictable and successful outcome.

Be sure to come back to my Blog as often as you would like to learn more about how to maximize your everyday marketing.  Please feel free to email me now at joel@altMD.com to schedule a personal 1-on-1 Coaching session where we can talk about your specific marketing problems and find the right solutions.

Many thanks to everyone who sent emails of concern.

Tropical Storm Fay is gone but did stop in Naples for a couple hours of tropical winds and driving rain.

Just a little clean-up for us, probably tomorrow.

Many thousand here still without power.

With the power back on here, and Internet available...
Back to work...

Good luck to all as it moves up North - be safe!!

Here, in its entirety, is Brian’s Commencement address delivered yesterday at Miami's Acupuncture Massage College.

***

Over 20 Year of ExcellenceDr. Browne, distinguished faculty and staff, proud and relieved parents, family and friends, and most importantly today’s graduates; it is my distinguished honor to be here today to celebrate with you.

While each of you has followed different paths on your journey to this special moment today, you have all chosen to dedicate yourselves to the most noble of professions- helping others – and for that you should be extremely proud.

By graduating today, you have not just proven that you have mastered oriental medicine or massage but most importantly that you are beginning to master life.  That if you follow your heart and truly apply yourself, that you can do anything and be anything – that you can make a difference.

Today marks the end of years of studying, practice and preparation.  Enjoy the moment.  Revel in your accomplishments.  Recognize how it feels to dedicate yourselves to a lofty goal and achieve it.  Savor the taste of success.  For today is really the beginning and not the end.

To successfully follow your heart, you will need to learn how to deal with fear. It is fear which prevents most people from reaching their fullest potential in life—fear of failure, fear of rejection from people we care about, fear that we simply aren’t good enough.  Do not give in to these fears for you have proven today that you can do anything and be anything that you set your mind to.

One of my favorite quotes is from Dr. Ruth Westheimer, who said:
"My favorite animal is the turtle. The reason is that in order for the turtle to move, it has to stick its neck out. There are going to be times in your life when you’re going to have to stick your neck out. There will be challenges and instead of hiding in a shell, you have to go out and meet them!"

One of the things that most holistic practitioners are afraid of is marketing.  It’s too complicated; too expensive; too capitalistic and not holistic enough.

Yet these fears, like all others, are irrational.  Marketing is nothing more than sharing your passion for healing.  To succeed, you must share that passion with as many people you can.

Overcome your fear of marketing by knowing deep in your heart that you have skills and knowledge that few others do.  That if you could only share those skills and knowledge with others, that you could help so many people improve their lives and wellbeing.

Starting tomorrow, your goal is to share those skills and knowledge with the world.  Success will not always come easy or fast, but if you commit yourself to sharing your passion, good things will always follow.
….
I started my first computer company as a sophomore in college.  The personal computer was just becoming popular and the Internet didn’t really exist yet.

My partner and I printed up some homemade brochures and passed them out in local neighborhoods to anybody who would take one.  We thought we would be millionaires overnight but to our surprise the phone didn’t ring.

A few weeks later, extremely discouraged by our prospects, the phone did ring.  Someone who got one of our brochures needed some help with his home computer.  It was a $30 job that was well beneath our capabilities and dreams but my partner and I both went to his house and wound up spending an extra 4 hours with him.

While we were excited to have our first customer, the prospect of one $30 assignment after several weeks really made us doubt ourselves.

A few weeks later, the phone rang again and it was the same guy who we did the $30 job for.  He told us that he really appreciated all the time and great service that we had given him and that he really needed our help at his psychology practice that had 10 computers and that his wife was a partner at a 20-employee law firm that also really needed our help.  Both became regular customers.  We made them the most important customers in the world and they both referred us to their friends and colleagues, who in turn referred us to friends and colleagues.

Two years after that first disappointing $30 job, we had over 100 customers including Xerox, Coca-Cola, Motorola and Burger king.
….
Your passion, combined with your skills, knowledge and great service is what is going to build your practice from your first patient into a thriving business.

Each of you can do it.  Put your fears aside and follow your heart.  Share your passion with others and great things will happen.

To help you get started marketing your passion, we are going to give each graduate a free website and blog and a 30-minute holistic marketing coaching session to get you setup and online.  That is a $500 commitment to your success because we believe in you and want to see each of you take what you learned at acupuncture massage college and apply it to building strong practices around helping those who need your skills, knowledge and dedication.

In closing, I would like to leave you with a Chinese proverb:
“An inch of time is an inch of gold but you can't buy that inch of time with an inch of gold.”

No matter what, always follow your heart and be passionate about everything you do.
Thank you and Congratulations!

I know what you are thinking...
Last week, this Blog included a personal story about my new grandson Max - and I made the correlation between his birth and the genesis of altMD on the Health & Wellness scene.

I know what you are thinking
.  With Hurricane Fay possibly bearing down on South Florida, and with Naples possibly in its sights, could he do it again?  Could he connect altMD and Hurricane Fay and come up with some cheesy analogy in order to make some ubiquitous point?  I'll try...

Like Fay, altMD is like a tropical storm that could grow in strength and impact... but it's a bit too early for you to know for sure.

Yes, it has the potential to be a big one, and many experts say it will definitely get there and affect a lot of people's lives.  Further, as with Fay, many professionals are joining forces now, in real-time, to prepare for and address its potential.

Being in this area for over 10 years now, we've seen a lot of Fays come and go - some living up to their press and predictions while others never reached their forecast strength and effect.

While I certainly do not make light of a serious situation in this post - just making an analogy - I predict that altMD will in fact be all that it can be, reaching its full potential.  And affect many lives.  In a good way.  By design.  With professionals joining forces.  Coming together to address common goals and in order to protect what is ours.

Whether you are joining forces with altMD and your colleagues now - or you jump on later on - altMD will be there for YOU and help our community grow and prosper.  We may not be able to predict the weather, but we can certainly create our own future.  I hope Tropical Storm Fay fizzles.  And I hope altMD succeeds.

Want to join forces now?  Just contact us via our online form or email me directly at joel@altMD.com and let us know how we can help you prepare for the future and maximize the potential forecast for altMD.  We'll walk you through each opportunity and help you take full advantage of all of the resources in the entire altMD community.

Be safe!  Be prepared.  Wish us here coming together now the best of luck!  If you would like to track Fay, visit the NOAA National Hurricane Center site.  If you would like to track altMD - you are already here...

John Belleme and Sandy Pukel are this week's altMD Persons of the Week!

As individuals, both of these terrific guys are accomplished thought leaders in the Health & Wellness arena.

Sandy is a worldwide icon in Macrobiotics and Diet and Nutrition.

John is one of this country’s leading authorities on the subject of miso and other traditional Japanese foods.

They get altMD's recognition award this week for something they accomplished together.  They were among the first people on the planet to envision and then create Wellness Travel as a vacation category, launching A Taste of Health - Holistic Holidays at Sea back in 2004 to help invent this still emerging segment of the Global Holistic Marketplace.

They are truly visionaries and at altMD we recognize their contribution to helping make healthy Diet and Nutrition more accessible to people everywhere - including while cruising on the high seas.  Thank you both, Sandy and John, for your vision and paradigm-changing contributions.  Sail on...

Welcome Aboard!  When you have about 29 minutes of uninterrupted “focus” time, now or later, review the following Mentor Guidepost.  Prepared with new VIP Members in mind, this will help YOU maximize your altMD Experience.

Okay, so I have my new VIP Listing on altMD.  Now what???

To begin with, let’s define our roles, moving forward.  Our role is hands-on mentor/coach and we are in position to help you maximize your Membership and the power of the altMD platform.  It is best when it is an interactive process and two-way street.  While we can and will help you reach your goals, your role is to identify and help us understand what your goals and objectives are for this new channel for you and your practice/business.

Many people see altMD as an extension of what they're currently doing.  Others see it as an opportunity to expand their brand, products and services.  Whatever your goals are – we can help you get there.  We have seen from experience that the most successful entrepreneurs use their coach as a guide.  A hands-on coach can fully participate but it is really up to YOU to drive this bus.  altMD will travel with you.  We will be in the seat right behind you – every step of the way!!!

Let’s begin now…  Today’s Mentor Guidepost is on the subject of maximizing your altMD VIP Listing.

This post is crafted in outline-numbered form to make it easy for both of us to ask and answer questions of each other via email or on a scheduled phone call regarding specific points that can help you build-out your altMD presence, channel and most important, your offerings. Ask questions!  Ask for help if you need some!  Enjoy the ride!

Mentor Guidepost #1:  Back to Basics

  1. Fine-Tuning your VIP Listing...
  2. Whatever stage you are at, please remember there is always so much more we/you can do with your altMD VIP Listing and Membership.
  3. As a VIP Member, your altMD Listing includes up to: 15 Photos, 10 Staff Bios, and unlimited Blog posts!
  4. It includes targeted keywords which are the online tags that help make sure you come out on top of the search results for your speciality(ies) and products/services.
  5. As of today’s date… the About, Staff Bios, Photos, Blog, Map & Directions and Contact Us pages are activated in our system and you have access now to all of these pages.
  6. Shortly, your VIP Listing will automatically evolve to what we call a VIP Community Website.
  7. Your VIP Community Website will have even more flexibility in personalized layout and design.
  8. You can pick your own names for your pages (tabs) – add sections/pages like Questions & Answers, Special Offers, Products, Reviews and more!
  9. Content TIP: Simply stated, all of your pages should be filled with “content” that helps promote your brand and services and increases your leads and referrals.
  10. By design, the altMD infrastructure supports lead capture »»»» lead conversion, as well as the two interim steps in the “sales” process – namely, lead incubation and lead nurturing.
  11. You are reading this post today because we have just started down this road together, and there is so much more we can do together to help you capture and convert leads via altMD!
  12. Now would be a good time to open your browser and pull up your altMD VIP Listing.
  13. Lead Capture:
  14. altMD LeadAlerts will come to you via both phone and email and we recommend that you keep your email address hidden behind the scenes/not public.
  15. Make sure your lead/referral emails should be sent to the email address you set-up when you joined.  Login and review your selection.  Should someone else in your office who can perhaps respond faster receive the leads?
  16. Note that ALL leads from the altMD System will tell you that they come from altMD.
  17. Lead Capture TIP: Always track where all your leads come from.  If you don’t already, consider asking prospects who phone or email you… where did you hear about me??  Tracking is basic good marketing sense.
  18. Creating Traffic in order to Create Leads for Incubation, Nurturing and Conversion:
  19. While it is also common sense, remember to create content that is focused on your target customer.  Write your copy from your target’s perspective.  Put yourself in their shoes.
  20. A good example of this is what Master Practice Management Coaches Dr. Dick Thom and Andy Belanger do on their VIP Listing.  Instead of framing their copy as all about them, they focus their story on their target group (Practitioners) and ask great intro questions upfront truly showing they understand what Practitioners face.
  21. Dick and Andy ask upfront:
    - Would you like to smooth out your operation and blast past problem elements that exist today?
    - How would you feel if your established financial policies gave you an edge in managing your money?
    - What would it mean if your "brand" was highly regarded in your community and referrals increased by 50%?
    - If you had more time for "customers" and had your time-management under control, what new priorities and goals could you NOW pay attention to?
  22. Andy and Dick even position their great Bios in a similar manner – framing their personal stories in terms of how their clients benefit and what it means to their clients.
  23. Bonus TIP: Not everyone is an expert copywriter.  If you need help, look no further than altMD’s ProCenter for this and other valuable services.
  24. Offers Drive Leads.  Leads Drive New Clients.
  25. Create offers that are unique and meaningful to target patients/clients and make sure your offers and "specials" are properly placed to be noticed on your altMD pages.
  26. Blogging Drives Leads.  Leads Drive New Clients.
  27. If you are a Practitioner, start Blogging now about:
    - Success Stories
    - New Treatments
    - Old Treatments
    - Your Unique Services
    - New Services
    - Recipes for Healthy Eating
    - Fitness and Wellness Tips
    - New Staff Members
    - New Studies
    - New Courses you have attended
    - Health Conditions and how you treat, with more Success Stories
    - Reviews of topical health articles you’ve read in the news
    - And More!
  28. If you are a Supplier, start Blogging now about:
    - Success Stories
    - New Products/Services
    - Old Products/Services
    - Your Unique Products/Services
    - Recipes for Healthy Business
    - Business Fitness and Wellness Tips
    - New Staff Members
    - New Studies
    - New Courses you have attended
    - Practitioners that you serve, with more Success Stories
    - Reviews of topical business articles you’ve read in the news
    - And More!
  29. Deserves repeating.  Unique Offers and Blogging Drive Leads.  Leads Drive New Clients.

Bonus Points:  When you compare #27 and #28 above, isn’t it interesting that whether you are a practitioner targeting new patients or a supplier targeting new practitioners – we all have exactly the same goals and strategies that help us reach these goals.  Only the target audience is different – the tools and tactics are the same.  At altMD, we often talk about helping to bring unity to the CAM Community.  Well this includes ALL specialists – whether you deliver your particular services to consumers/patients like a Jane Fecteau or B2B like a Kelly Robbins.  Then there is someone like a Kevin Doherty who is both a practitioner and a supplier.  Bottom line… We are all in this together and part of the same Health and Wellness World.  The way we help each other grow this market and ultimately help more people is by working together and by supporting each other.  That's our common bond.  At altMD, that's our goal.

That’s it for today!

To summarize... this Mentor Guidepost covers the basics on how you can maximize your VIP Listing
Do not hesitate to ask for help from altMD or from your talented pool of fellow VIP Members in our ProCenter
That's what we are here for!  AND be sure to come back to my Blog as often as you would like to learn more about how to maximize your altMD Experience.  Or email me now at joel@altMD.com to schedule your personal 1-on-1 Coaching session.  Have a great day!!  Over and out...

WOW!  I just read Andy and Dick's blog post about the importance of training your staff towards a positive attitude.  Way to go!!  If you haven't seen it yet, check it out right here - right now!

Funny thing is that I was going to create a post myself today with Today's Marketing Tip for Practitioners.  I would have to say that THIS post hits the Nail on the Head - or, if you are an Acupuncturist, this post hits the Needle right on the Point.

I have known these Master Coach's for almost a year now.  Their student and specialist training courses are something special - and they work with top-notch schools and programs like:

  • National College of Natural Medicine
  • Oregon College of Oriental Medicine (OCOM)
  • Bastyr University
  • South West College of Naturopathic Medicine (SCNM)
  • Canadian College of Naturopathic Medicine
  • Boucher Institute of Naturopathic Medicine

Visit their altMD Listing if you are looking for Expert Practice Management help and support.  And thank you both, gentlemen, for making Today's Tip super easy to write! :)

My New GrandsonI have two grandsons.  Ethan (7 this month) and his new cousin, MAX (64 days young as of this blog post).  And I am very proud.

Like any family-man, I think a great deal about the health and happiness of my family members.  Their comfort, their success, and always being there for each other.  I love my family and I'm sure you love yours.  It's only natural.

Well - altMD is pretty much a newborn, too.  We launched the beta version of the site just a few months ago and as one of the founders, I guess it's another new baby in my family.
And I am very proud.

Over the past many months since my friend and business partner Brian gave birth to the altMD idea, I have been very fortunate to connect with hundreds of practitioners and other specialists who have joined our extended family.  And it is wonderful to be able to say that the vast majority have always been there for me ...as I hope altMD and I have been there for each of them.

I know - I know, I'm getting a little sentimental in this post and hope you can forgive me - I'll be back to my old serious self right after I ...Click! "Save".

But here's my primary point.

At altMD, our highest calling and one of our major goals is to be there for our extended family members and help bring success and business-health to our community - this means you!  As the front-line of this corporate effort, please know you have my ear.  We are a young and flexible company and all ideas are welcome and will be considered for action.  My biggest objective is to make sure that you are in position to MAXimize altMD every step of the way.  So please feel welcome to MAXimize Joel Fellman - MAX Fellman's proud grandfather.

MAX Fellman!  ...Click! "Save".
