Can you imagine being told that I could simply "tap, tap, tap" with my fingertips on some points around my face and upper body, and it would release my fear of flying? Skeptical, so was I?
To give you some background, I HAD a fear of flying for several years. As a result, it catapulted me to such a level of anxiety and I actually experienced what anxiety attacks felt like. If you haven't experienced these sorts of attacks, you literally feel like you're dying. Your entire body goes through a hypnotic state of fear, and all the cellular structure begins to repond with alarms all over the place. Yikeorama!
I hated this feeling, but I didn't know how to stop it. Just thinking of an airplane would set off the alarms. And my husband at that time would say, "Just stop thinking about it!" For years, I took the pharmaceutical route as I knew of no other choice but to be tranquilized and be "Zombie Woman." I hated this feeling as well because I felt out of control, and wanted a different experience. I wanted to be happy whenever I would think of flying so I could create an ideal scene, not only for me, but my family as well as they were impacted by my fear of flying.
Okay, how does one stop the mass confusion of thoughts that are contributing to this false perception? When all the cellular structure is designed to evoke the alarm system just by merely thinking of airplane, how do you stop yourself from pulling the alarms?
When there is a fire, break the glass and pull out the tool, EFT (emotional freedom technique), to the rescue. When I was first introduced to EFT, I couldn't believe that simply tapping on some points would alleviate the anxiety. Yet, I was so desperate to have a different experience that I gave it a try. I tapped before the flight and during the flight as well. With all this tapping, I thought it might cause severe bruising as I anchored myself to EFT as my security blanket. Hey, brusing can be helped with a little make up, right?
If you're not familiar with EFT, it is similar to acupuncture without the needles. When there is a negative emotion in the body, the natural energy system (the good flow) will be closed off. When this happens, it's time to sound the alarms. When we tap on the meridians, this opens up the energy flow so that a new awareness, a new thought can be experienced. It's a very natural process and so simple and easy.
Now, I fly all over the place with no problems. If I face some turbulence, which might sound off some alarms, I simply begin tapping and this allows me to create a sense of calm and peace, and evoke trust in everyone on the flight. And my happy place is a much more comfortable place to be then to experience this rush of fear shouting, "Sound the alarms! Woman out of control!"
If you know someone who has a fear of flying, let them know about how I changed my life. If they need some assistance, I'm here!
