Welcome to Morrissey Compton Educational Center
The Morrissey/Compton Educational Center, Inc. is a nonprofit, private
corporation founded in 1982 by Dr. Patricia Morrissey and Dr. Carolyn
Compton. Dr. John Brentar is the Director. The agency provides both
diagnostic and treatment services for children and adults with
learning disabilities, as well as professional consultation to
agencies and community organizations.
It is the mission of Morrissey/Compton Educational Center to enable
children and adults with learning disabilities and other
school-related difficulties to achieve their goals by providing the
highest quality diagnostic and intervention services in a supportive
environment.
Services are offered in both English and Spanish.
Psychoeducational Evaluations
A psychoeducational evaluation includes an educational evaluation as
well as an assessment of intellectual functioning. This type of
evaluation is typically used to assess for a learning disability. Most
commonly, a standardized IQ test is given to assess intellectual
functioning, but our psychologists may administer other tests of
cognitive ability depending on the areas of concern.
Intellectual Evaluations
An intellectual evaluation is conducted when an IQ test is required to
update a student's records, or for application to a school or
program.
Extended Psychoeducational Evaluations
This type of evaluation is typically necessary when difficulty with
learning, attention, concentration, and organization are the areas of
concern. Often given in conjunction with a psychoeducational
evaluation, a psychologist can assess for Attention
Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and/or learning disorders
through tests, interviews, and rating scales. Sometimes an ADHD
evaluation is the only assessment a child or adult receives if
attention is the only area of concern.
Psychological Evaluations
Sometimes a student's educational problems are related to
psychological issues such as anxiety or depression. Psychologists
look at these issues through rating scales, an interview to understand
the history of the concern, and specific tests designed to assess
these issues.
Tutoring
The Center provides tutoring for both children and adult students. Our
tutors are educational specialists specifically trained in teaching to
different age groups and learning disabilities. They mentor students,
helping them understand their abilities and how to compensate for
their weaknesses. Most tutoring is carried out in the Center on an
individual basis.
Consultation
Educational consultation services are available to individuals and
families, as well as schools and other agencies. The Center provides
consultation to agencies involved in the juvenile justice system
within Santa Clara County. Consultation services are provided by
experienced educational specialists and clinical psychologists.
Therapy
The Center provides psychotherapy to students who are experiencing
social or emotional problems such as anxiety that stem from or
directly impact students' performance within the school setting.
Therapy is provided by our clinical psychologists.
